I'm at the point in the game where you have to tar the carrot in order to glue it to the helmet. When I click the carrot on the barrel of tar the game freezes and does not continue. Any way to get around this glitch?

I should add that I somehow managed to duplicate the carrot in my inventory, temporarily I had both the regular carrot and the tarred carrot in my bag. Pretty sure I'm in an unwinnable state at this point if I can't get the carrot to work, so any help would be appreciated.
