It seems that later on in the game it takes forever for any buildings to get built. Building more construction centers seems to help a little bit but it doesn't help that the builders seem to be complete idiots. Anyway to get those lazy builders to actually build stuff faster? It shouldn't take 30 years to build a power plant, which alot of the big money making buildings require. By the time it gets built, half of your game time has already gone if you're playing for score on the default length setting. Any ideas?

I found that building slows down a lot if you place buildings far away from the nearest construction office. It seems they will spend a certain time working beofre going back home, relaxing, etc and moving from the construction office to the building site is subtracted from the time they spend working. Building a construction office closer to the building site seems to speed up building for me.
pretty much what the other guy said.. best way is to put up a construnction office or 2 near buildings you wanna get done fast.

basically the way it works, tropicans do what ever it is they are doing, in off time then decide to goto work.. that means going to the construction office. now they are on work time. So now if they have to spend all their time just walking to the site, they are still constired on the job. When they arive to the site, they make 2 wacks of a hammer and its quiting time.

If you build new offices near the buildings you want done, basically all that time spent walking to work is now consitered off time, now you'll get a full day in..

tropico 3 changes this with roads, if ya like this game, i highly suggest getting t3-gold. has tons of what was great in t1, and added many lvls of game play depth.

anyways, basically, as your city grows and the old construction offices become far from where they are building now.. shut um down and make some new ones closer.
Besides construction offices close buy, make the building you want first top priority. And bulid some cheap housing close so they will live there and not waste time walking home.

Some suggestions:

1. Build multiple construction offices spread all over the map; so you already have a 'local' construction office which spends less time on travel to site and more on actual building

2. Keep building houses and other facilities - pubs, clinics, churches et cetera - over the map so that people spend less time travelling

3. Advanced buildings like cathedral, power plant, airport or stadium do take a lot of time, be prepared to have a couple of construction offices spend an year or more building

4. Delete construction offices from fully built up areas to free up labor and costs, try to sync this with opening of new construction offices so that the skills learnt (by builders) are not wasted in another profession
Any measure improving the speed people learn their jobs helps (e.g. certain dictator settings, TV program "Learning with Larry", the education campaign edict(?)) - for construction workers it means that the more experienced they are, the more they build which each hammer whack.

The are rumours too that sometimes fiddling around with the "SweatShop" / "Easy-does-it" can help. The 1st is the default one - and following the decription, it is the one more work is done while decreasing job happiness. However, there is one caveat - the extra work seems to make people tired sooner...so if they are already tired from walking before, this might tip the balance and lead them to abandon their work soon again.
Build ways/roads. Tropicans move faster on'em.
