When I try to run Trine: Enchanted Edition on Kubuntu 19.04 I get this error:

./bin/trine1_linux_launcher_32bit: /home/jake/GOG Games/Trine Enchanted Edition/lib/libz.so.1: version `ZLIB_1.2.9' not found (required by /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpng16.so.16)

So Trine is bundled with an old version of zlib that won't play nice with the libpng from my package manager, and as a result the game won't run. I had this problem on 18.10 and (I think) 18.04 too. Is there any chance that the developers will update the GOG version to actually be playable out of the box on modern Linux?

I apologize for the very long delay in replying, and I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with our game. Have you found a way to get the game running or does the error still occur?

Unfortunately we aren't currently planning to make any updates at the moment as our new projects keep us busy, but I will forward the request nevertheless.

It looks like GOG bundled some libraries that are now causing some problems for more recent distros. Try removing everything from <installdir>/lib/ except for libpng12.so.0 and libpng12.so.0.50 - this got it starting for me on Linux Mint 19.2 (which is based on Ubuntu 18.04).

Yep, that did it for me. Many thanks! Now if only my wireless 8bitdo controller would work right...

Have you tried using symlinks (shortcuts) to "fool" the game into thinking it's using the required libraries when it's actually using the ones on your system which are probably newer? I've done this with a few games and it worked (though I'm on an Arch based system and SUSE based in the past).

adamhm: snip
I'm using Mint 21.3 and Trine didn't launch.

I installed libgtk2.0-bin:i386 : sudo apt install libgtk2.0-bin:i386
That solved an error about libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 I got but then I had another error about zlib, so as suggested by adamhm, I removed libz.so.1 and libz.so.1.2.8 from the lib folder, and after that, the game's launcher started and now it works through lutris ! Strangely, it doesn't work without lutris but that's not a big deal.

Thanks adamhm !
