Near the end of Shadowed Halls there is a gate that you need to open by placing one portal beneath a fire stream. I did that, but haven't found a way to get across to the other side. I reset all skills and re-assigned them so that I get the ability to air-glide using the Knight's shield, which feels like cheating (the re-assigning bit). I then watched how one LPer got across by stacking two boxes and a plank and jumping (his version didn't have the gliding skill).

Has anybody experienced a situation where the only way to proceed further is to reset all skill upgrades and re-assign them? Is it expected to be used like that?

Thank you. The part I was referring to starts at 7:10 in that video you linked. I guess there is no obvious way to go through that gate without using some sort of piling or timing.

Yes, I think you're right. There may be other ways, but piling boxes is one of the most obvious ones.
