I can't seem to pass the first obstacle on Solfor island. I have tried over and over again to get onto the platform across the way, but I can't seem to get the timing right. It's driving me nuts! I don't know why I'm having so much trouble, but at this point I'd be willing to have someone else get me across, just so I can continue playing.

That's one of the more frustrating puzzles I believe (less "puzzle" and more "arcade"). I'd suggest you keep trying and focus on the timing carefully. I think the key is to wait until the two platforms on the left start extending slightly before the one on the right does.
