I downloaded TA for Mac, I have a 2012 Mac Air running OS 10.8.5. I installed the game, and go into the menu page. It seems to work fine: video intro, menu page, settings, etc. But as soon as I try to Skirmish or start a Campaign, it crashes saying there's a serious problem and it couldn't run, that it could be a problem with the application or Wine.

Did I have to download Wine prior to using GOG's Total Annihilation? If so, this is problematic because I couldn't find a Mac version of Wine and know next to nothing about compiling it for my Mac. As you can tell, I am NOT a programmer type and am the most basic user.

Any clear guidance would be helpful. Thanks!

No, it *should* just work as long as you downloaded the Mac version from the GOG site. They use something called Winebottler that is supposed to have it all ready to go for us.

For the record, I too am having this problem. I'm on a Macbook Pro from late 2008, but I very recently wiped it to do a clean reinstall of OS X Mavericks. On top of this, I experience crazy graphic problems. Some randomly sized rectangles on the screen show Total Annihilation, and other randomly sized rectangles seem to be displaying whatever I was doing from 5 minutes ago.

Interesting. Unfortunately I haven't gotten into the game far enough to experience those problems. I have the Mac version from the GOG site, so I wonder what it could be with my system. Anyway, thanks for your info and hopefully somebody will have a solution!

This worked for me, might help.


Please open the Applications folder, open the Terminal.app type in:
sudo open
that is "sudo open " without the quotes.
Do not press Enter, drag the game's app from the Applications folder to the terminal, this should add the correct path, press Enter now, you should receive a prompt to enter your password.
Please let me know if this helps.

Please go to Applications, right click game's App and select Show Package Contents, open Wineskin.app , click Advanced > Test Run.
After that right click game's App, select Show Package Contents, open Contents > Resources > Logs
and please send me the contents of the Logs folder (add them to a zip archive if the file size is too big).

Please open the Wineskin.app go to Advanced > Tools > Winetrics > settings and enable ddr=gdi
Now press Run and please let me know if this changes anything.

Please launch the game, go to Options > Visuals and set the Screen size to match your desktop resolution, that is 1440 x 900 as far as I can tell

Not exactly a help, but I remember seeing quite a few topics about MAC issues with solution here, so try looking a bit more.

Set the resolution to 1280x720 (Single Player -> Settings -> Visual), problem fixed.
I have exactly the same problem on my mac with external 2K monitor set as the main one. The same problem occures even on Windows. The game simply can not handle high resolutions :(

Go into the Wine Options using the help in this thread to get to it.

Change this setting:

Wineskin -> Set Screen Options -> "Use Mac Driver instead of X11"

After that, I had no trouble. Ignore the setting about ddr=gdi and doing anything "sudo".

I tried this and my MAC crashed. :( Any other suggestions than this or those listed above?

What seemed to work for me is to update the screen size using the in-game menu AND changing the screen size with Wineskin.
