Well, the animations (intro and menu figurines) don't play for me. I hear the sound where the movies should be, but the screen is black. Any suggestions?

edit: OK, choosing software rendering fixes the problem. Guess I kind of jumped the gun on this one.

This is an old issue, actually (back in 2004 the game was behaving the same way). Software does the trick, indeed, but you lose the shiny effects on flames, building sparkles, soft fog... Nothing to worry about, as the "hand drawn" look of the software mode really suits the atmosphere. Anyway, if you want to get BOTH the cinematics (and animations in the main menu) and the special effects, you will need to use nGlide; it will emulate a Voodoo card, in Glide mode (other wrappers don't work, Kingdoms only recognizes glide3x, which nGlide provides). The only issue is the gamma, th game being too bright in this mode. If someone knows how to decrease gamma in-game, it would be possible to play the game in all its glory ^^.
What video card do you have? I have an nvidia 9800 gtx+ with W7 and its working fine.

I thought nVidia kept backwards compatibility, since they're the ones that bought Voodoo back in the day. In any case, thank you for the explanation.

Have you tried this solution from the FAQ? (The FAQ can be locating by going to the game's download page on your shelf and clicking "Support" at the bottom). Usually re-downloading it using the GOG downloader does the trick:

Game "is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash."
a) Redownload the game using the newest version of the GOG Downloader:
https://secure.gog.com/downloader
To download, make sure the "GOG.com Downloader mode" is switched to ON before clicking the "Game installer" button. After the download is complete, reinstall the game.
b) Use this workaround if using the Download didn't help:
- Go to Applications -> Terminal
- Type in:
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine
but don't press Enter.
- Drag the application to the Terminal window, this should add the path.
- Press Enter.
