I just won a game in hard mode against hard-AI in a full metal map. That was a 2vs2 (my ally was AI too).

The first computer player was easily defated. I placed few missle turrets and 2 pulverizer near its base, after 5-10 minutes turrets automatically killed his commander (they were placed on metal hills) and turrets also prevented him to expand (missile turrets are really cheap and powerful and can be builded fast also with planes)

To take out the 2nd foe I had to play the map for almost 3 hours. Basically my ally AI was doing NOTHIN, enemy was always near my base and my ally base and pushing insanely regardless of how many units and turrets I had in defense.

I was able to win only using 6 nuclear bases, I started nuking computer base sendig fast scout planes.. mmm I just passed 40-50 minutes to AIM and launch nukes(did you know that certain buildlings requried multiple nukes to be taken off? O_O), the computer was very fast to rebuild the base, while my ally basically never helped (shouldn't it supposed to be a Hard AI too?).

I think I have launched something like 300 nukes :/

and fo course Score Screen just freezed (some number like produced energy probably was overflowed over 2/4 billions)
Check out http://files.tauniverse.com/ for a small list of AIs available. I haven't tried any so no idea of the quality...

For some reason, I always find the AI tougher on water-centric maps. Or maybe I just suck at those maps ; )
thakns for the link :)
Goto www dot tauniverse dot com and download the beta 4.0 patch fixes a lot of TAs old problems including pathfinding, ais, and many other issues and includes the replayer. Is set up to work perfectly with the gog release also. Also is set to default to 1500 units per player, instead of just 250. Can still play multiplayer on the WarZone also at www dot e-warzone dot com/total-annihilation. There are also links to thousands of maps on file universe from that site. Have fun.....
