I've read about Runic Games' shut down several times here and there. The game is on discount now so I'm curious about how the shut down changed the multiplayer of the game. Is the matchmaking server still running? If not then do they added an option for direct connection to work around?

I'll chime in here to answer your question about the closure of Runic Games and the multiplayer portion of the game.

Even though Runic Games was shut down by Perfect World Entertainment, it did not affect the lobby/multiplayer portion of the game. According to the developers, they collaborated with Perfect World and made plans to keep the servers running for the foreseeable future. At the current moment, they are still online/active until we fans get word that isn't the case anymore.
