From level 42 (or 41) my dog has gained a huge knockback ability, about 10+ meters. It occurs on every bite and affects enemies of any size, including mega-bosses.

Is it a bug of a feature? Sometimes it helps, sometimes it hampers in some tactics.

I haven't played #1 in a while but did you get him a new tag or collar that has that bonus?

No, double-checked this. It is in effect without any trinkets.

P.S. Not sure what you mean by "tag", but in TL1 pet can wear only rings and necklaces AFAIK.
