Just purchased and played a few rounds with the Longcoats. My initial thought is this is more style than substance. I like the setting, the theme, animal farm meets communism, but the game play itself seems kind of odd to me. Almost a return to the old RTS days of build up the biggest and the bestest and the mostest and march to victory. Am I wrong? Is there some depth to come in the way combat works?

Yeah... kept playing. Definitely not for me. Style and such is great but there is just nothing thee past that. Ahh well.
You really got the wrong impressions. You choose which creatures to manufacture, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. You can then lead them as a group (which gets automatically replenished), or move one species at a time. It's an amazing distillation of RTS mechanics, taking away the APM factor and focusing instead on strategy.
This is probably my favorite RTS because it's so simple, a match is short and it can be played with gamepad.

But I'd still agree with "Almost a return to the old RTS days of build up the biggest [...] and march to victory", except it's exactly what I wanted.

Distillation of RTS mechanics? At best you march your pile of melee in front of your pile of ranged. Youre right, they certainly took away actions. Just build and move. Your kidding yourself if you are trying to claim there is some depth here. Which if thats what you are looking for, mission accomplished. I was hoping for something with the need for player decisions.
