The setting is Venice and I (Lara) am working my way through the level by methodically exploring, flipping switches and all manner of clever things.

Then, as I'm in the boat, there's this guy - he doesn't like me based on his willingness to shoot me. So I tried to shoot from the boat which it seems is not possible. I know, I'll swim stealthily to the platform but no, by the time I've climbed up and drawn my weapon, I get pierced by bullets and fall in to a crumpled heap. OK, I've tried to load the same game on numerous occasions and it's not working - time for a different tactic.

Following some exploration, I find and pull a lever and feel a sense of achievement at last as a door swings open. I gingerly enter said room and find there are no enemies, just a silver key. Turns out that it's not as strait forward as I thought - the door has swung shut behind me and the only route out is to climb a wall to reach a room above. Half way up now but I hear a dog barking - a tingle of familiarity runs down my spine. I reach the top and hope to shoot the dog whilst hanging from the wall. Nope, that's not possible either. The only way is to climb, jump, draw my weapon and shoot. Ah, there's also a big guy with an even bigger baseball bat waiting for me. Again, after jumping, rolling, shooting and swearing, I die a horrible death. The dog settles down contentedly, the baseball bat man puffs his chest out victoriously and my lifeless body is in an unnatural position.

Now as this has happened after reloading on numerous occasions, frustration has got the better of me. So I turn to my fellow GOG'ers to hold my hand and guide me patiently through not only these situations but also, general gameplay help and tips. I fear that my laptop is on the brink of being introduced to my stored lump hammer that has been waiting for such an opportunity.

Thanks in advance chaps and chapesses.

This level sucks for a 1st time player. I've completed TR 2 DOZENS of times and I STILL need help in this one. The rest of the game can be very challenging but not quite like Venice. Here is a link and I recommend bookmarking the whole Stella url as you will probably need it on the ship wreck later on.

I have played this series front and back so I know what you're going through. How's your health status? Can you add a screenshot so we know EXACTLY where you're at?

But feel free to pick our brains as well. Those walkthroughs are what THEY did: you may find your own method.

edit: I think I know where you're at, if I read your description correctly.

That link I posted helps but if you don't like walkthroughs this particular sequence is easy enough if you have played enough TR. For precaution make sure you are at full health and start climbing the ladder...now comes the tricky part. You need to back flip off the ladder onto the upper landing BUT if you are too high or low on the ladder you will hit something and come crashing back down to the 1st floor. If you get the placement right you should land perfect and ready to draw and fire which is what you should do IMMEDIATLY when your feet hit the ground. You actually should be able to draw mid-backflip but that isn't totally necissary. The only real other problem is that you won't know exactly where the goon or the dog are untill you land so you need to have some health in case you take a few shots which may be unavoidable.
Ahhh, so he's near the boathouse. Yup, do that.

Thanks for links and advice. Following a lot of re-loading, I finally did it using tinyE's suggestion.

You made the point that there are situations where you have to accept taking a few shots. I find that so frustrating. The other thing I've noticed is that goons and thugs have weapons which, although no different to Lara's, have a longer range.

I do like the game despite its flaws. Out of interest, do these get addressed in TR3?

Finally, thanks Craig as well. I assume you've recently registered so welcome!

Kind of. TR3 is much more about exploring (after level one you get to choose where you go) and to be honest you are going to be trying too hard not to get lost to even notice the bad guys. I've probably played 3 more than any of the others and have a million little usefull tips; when you get to it I'll be around here somewhere. There are some nasty boss battles but if you conserve ammo and keep an eye on bonuses you should be loaded to with machine guns and rocket launchers to help.

One more thing about TR2 that 3 reminded me off, when you get to Tibet DON'T SHOOT THE MONKS!!!! If you accidentally hit one RE-LOAD and start over. If you can keep the monks on your side they will kill off a good chunk of the baddies for you. If you shoot one it doubles the amount of people trying to kill you. I mention it because 3 has some of that, ie: a monkey at the beginning that if you are nice enough to will acutally lead you to some nice stuff in the 1st level.
