I was hoping I could replace my PS1 copies with PC versions for better safe-keeping, but I'm not so sure now.

Either,
1) The cutscenes won't load, and therefore the game won't load and I'm stuck with a black screen and clicking noise,
2) The cutscenes load without sound,
3) The game loads without sound,
4) Dosbox crashes half the time I try to exit forcing me to force shutdown,
5) And to top it all off, that stupid health bar flew off into another dimension.

When I load, I don't know whether I will have sound or not, whether cutscenes with appear correctly or at all, or whether I will be able to safely quit the game. It's all completely random. Oh and for that health bar issue, I heard the trick about pressing either F3 or F4 to alter screen size, bu apparentlyt those buttons don't do those functions anymore.

I have tried every trick I read on here. I have tried changing the "Graphic Mode" setting in the Dosbox configurator, I have tried every compatibility mode, I have tried altering details using Notepad like some have suggested, and I have tried fiddling with my graphics card settings.

And because I know people are going to ask,
Windows 10 Home version 1511
Intel (R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU 4.00GHz
16 GB of RAM
GeForce GTX 970

I'm not really sure what I'm asking here because I don't know what else to ask or where else to look. I suppose this is more of a complaint from a frustrated customer who can't get this to run after days of trying. If someone comes up with a potential solution I haven't tried above, then I will of course be grateful even if it doesn't work. But for now, I'm just at a complete loss and about ready to give up on Tomb Raider on here. It's becoming too much of a hassle for a game that's said to be compatible.

In the meantime, the Playstation is looking pretty good right now...

I can't even get it to pass the intros. This is fucking bullshit. What the hell GOG?
I think that part of the problem may be that it is using a special build of DOSBox to support 3DFX. One issue I've had is that it crashes whenever I try to bring up the key-mapping tool (shift key does not work for me by default).

I was luck enough to find the game on CD in a thrift shop, and that seems to run just fine in standard DOSBox (0.74).
I bought the game recently and ran into the same problems (under Windows 8) as discussed here and also in this thread.

After some tinkering I came up with the following solution:

1. The DOSBox SVN Daum build bundled with the game is quite outdated, so the first step is to get the most recent version from 25 January 2015. Same goes for nGlide, download the latest version from the Zeus Software site (v2.0 as of the time of writing this) and install it. DOSBox may be unpacked into any folder you want, preferably not on the C: drive (so that you don't have to mess with permissions).

2. Delete/rename glide2x.dll and glide2x_x64.dll that come with DOSBox SVN Daum so that it uses nGlide instead.

3. Open up dosbox.conf (should be in the same folder as dosbox.exe) and edit the following:

a) find the string fullscreen=false and change it to fullscreen=true

b) change memsize=16 to memsize=63

c) change cycles=auto to cycles=auto 70% limit 77000 (this will limit the amount of CPU cycles emulated and prevent excessive CPU heating)

d) go to the end of dosbox.conf (where it says [autoexec]) and add the following lines:
---code starts here---
mount C "C:\Games\Tomb Raider 1\"
imgmount d "C:\Games\Tomb Raider 1\game.dat" -t iso -fs iso
c:
cd TOMBRAID
cls
tomb.exe
exit
---code ends here---
where "C:\Games\Tomb Raider 1\" is the actual path to where the game is installed.

4. Go to the nGlide setup and change settings:

a) set screen resolution to By desktop

b) set aspect ratio to Preserve original

5. You can now double-click dosbox.exe and play the game.

This results in Tomb Raider being rendered in full screen at your desktop resolution instead of 640x480, and the cutscenes should all play normally. Press F3 while in-game to remove black borders around gun fire sprites.

I get the game to load ok, but the in game menus just keep spinning and I can't get out of the game. Alt-F4, Alt-Tab, Windows-D, nothing works. Finally had to Ctrl-Alt-Del, open Task Manager and force quit DosBox.

Maybe I'll try again with the Xbox controller unplugged.
The best solution is to ditch DOSBox and convert the game to the Windows version. Everything works perfectly and you get proper widescreen, which you can't with the DOS version. It's a little bit of work, but it's very worth it.

Wow, I forgot I made this.

I ended up using the TombATI patch, including the 1080p texture patch. Everything worked except for the final secret glitch and the credit music. I believe those are easily fixed with downloads, but I was too lazy to bother. The game worked and looked good; I was happy.
