If you're like me and want to play TR1 with a playstation controller (so that it feels like you're playing on a playstation) then follow my guide. When I tried to play the game with my ps3 controller initially, the menu screen would spin around like a merry-go-round. Obviously that's not what we want, so we're here to fix that.

If you've already set up SCPToolkit then skip to step 2.

--------------------

SOFTWARE PREREQUISITES
SCPToolkit
antimicro (I used antimicro-2.23-win32.portable.zip)

Please google and download the software above. GOG won't let me post links yet.

STEPS

Step #1: Install and setup SCPToolkit (if you haven't already got it). I won't explain how to set this up, the installer should walk you through it. If you get stuck, there are plenty of youtube videos explaining how to set up the SCPToolkit and get your PS3 controller working.

Ensure that you have a working PS3 controller before continuing. Search for and open 'Set up USB game controllers" in the start menu to see if it's working properly.

Step #2: Download and unzip antimicro. Open it.

Step #3: Antimicro is basically the same as xpadder, joy2key etc. It allows you to bind button presses on your ps3 controller to keyboard presses. So that's what we're gonna do now.

To save time, I've created a profile that sets up all the controls like they were in the PS1 version of TR1, including movement with the left joystick. You can download it here: bit_ly/2KJUkt3 (replace the underscore with a dot). Download and save that file somewhere, and load it in antimicro.

Please look at the attached image as a reference for binding the PS1 TR1 controls to your controller.

Step #4: Once that's done, save your profile and minimise antimicro (it will hide in your taskbar). Go to your TR1 installation and find dosboxTR.conf and open it up in notepad. Hit CTRL+F and search for "joysticktype=" (without quotes). Make sure this is set to none (so that it looks like joysticktype=none). Save the file and close it.

As far as I could tell this is what was causing the menu screen to spin around constantly and cause the ps3 controller to not work properly. This will turn off dosbox's inbuilt joystick support and allow us to use our ps3 controller freely.

--------------------

That's it, once you've setup all the bindings on your ps3 controller and have turned off joystick support in dosbox, you should be good to go. Just ensure that the TR1 controls are set to 'Default Keys' at the main menu.
