Have anyone tried playing TR1+2+3 using a 360 controller? Does it work by itself or does it need JoytoKey or Xpadder?

Just tried now and the menu screen either keeps rotating non stop or I can move it left and right but not select anything. Using joytokey doesnt work.

Haven't checked yet with TR2/3, but I think you can use a gamepad with TR1: You just have to edit dosbox.conf with the following settings under the "joystick" section:

joysticktype=auto
timed=true
autofire=false
swap34=false

I had this exact problem. Here is your fix (assuming 360 controller):

Step 1: Modify all keys necessary for xpadder.

Step 2: Take the battery pack out right before launching. Start the game. Once the Eidos logo comes up, feel free to start up the controller, the check for incompatible controllers (the rotating screen thing) is done directly after the dosbox prompt.

Step 3: Set up your xpadder controller in TR1's in-game control setup.

I have the 360 controller working with the following configuration (Setting timed to false will fix the issue with the menu screen rotating);

joysticktype=auto
timed=false
autofire=true
swap34=false
buttonwrap=false
It works pretty well however the right and left triggers cannot be set to anything, at least not in 2 and 3. I've been unable to get a controller to successfully work in TR1.
how do you get to the point where you can change this information?

joysticktype=auto
timed=false
autofire=true
swap34=false
buttonwrap=false
I'm playing Tomb Raider 2 with Xpadder right now perfectly fine.
I recommend you a program called "joytokey". It allows you to control ACTUALLY ANYTHING in your computer with any gamepad working in windows.
In the dosboxTR.conf file set:

joysticktype=auto
timed=false
autofire=false
swap34=false
buttonwrap=true

Setting timed to false will stop the menu constantly scrolling and setting buttonwrap to true will let you configure the buttons using xpadder (or anyother remapper), as far as I know dos games only support a max of 4 buttons so you will need to use a mapping program like xpadder.

I'm using a 360 controller with xpadder mappings to the default keybindings and it works perfectly. Definitely the best way to play Tomb Raider 1 these days on any platform.
Yeah I have a similar problem as khisanth. I cannot select anything in the menu and when selecting items it either works fine or starts spinning unless moved again. Any ideas?

Does anyone else have the game freeze when trying to configure the Look function with a gamepad?

For TR2 and 3 I've figured a control scheme that should be fine. I made a post about it here. TR1's a bit more complicated..
