I hope following add some weight to my post:
1) I signed up just for giving this feedback.
2) Im 36 years old, 25 years of playing experience in different quality games (civilization, tycoons, HOMM etc), that have highest rankings and reviews in category. One thing that I value game with, is by time that it takes to "crack" it. After 2 days of gameplay I have cracked This War Of Mine almost completely. Most difficult settings is like a walk in the park, last option to make it more difficult is to pick most useless characters, then its done completely.
I want to tell You: You are on the edge of something sensational! This War of Mine could be best game ever made if only (mistakes You should remove with patch):
1) Guarding units should change movement patterns. Player should not know for sure, he can take on given map kitchen knife and backstab all guards. Some situations should end in careful pattern choosing in order to get by. Like in Commandos.
2) Number of guards should change in time, for example some guards could "patrol" between hospital and warehouse. Some very rare situation should force player to fight or escape immediately without scavagening. This is crucial. At the moment game offers very few situations where I can not come back with ressources that I have planned. In house of elderly couple for example, a police squad would arrive in somewhere 1 and 2 hours when couple sees intruder etc. The main point behind this is, a good player can build up independent economy, based on risk free scavages even in winter. risk free = predictible. New game, same pattern.
3) Door salesman should rarely offer wood and parts. Fast supply of wood/materials is at the moment a key to crack the game despite of difficulty settings. Once You have windows secured, heating and rat traps up, You are almost quaranteed to win, because You can feed 2 characters nicely on rat traps only, if fertilizer is given from herbal garden. Only thing You really need to do, is to carry wood and fuel for melting snow and heating house while rat is baking. Rat traps should be much less effective or there should be possibility to build just one of them.
4) There are too many ressources, or they are scavanged too slowly by AI. Player can easily beat 45 days game without even opening half of the maps. Of course that needs to build certain economy in house and thats annoying and boring micro! Some game mechanism should make it possible still losing the game after the player has mentioned premises up and running.
5) latter 50% of days are repeating themselves. Challange is not grading, but in good game, it definitely should. Food and medicines should become more and more rare, at latest days killing or very high price trading should be only options to get food. This is logical, as in war people would scavange for food in first priority.
6) trading should be more expensive and not cover more than 30% of needs for household/food. At the moment player can only sit in the house, produce alcohol and trade everything, by repeating the same actions over and over again. With exclusion of harsh winter, when player can scavange empty places with just axe and chop furniture for consumables.
Or additionally (features to add if You want to earn a lot of money)
1) Multiplayer where characters can fight / steal from each other
2) Some mild leveling for characters. Leveling should be very slow, but characters should keep it trought different games. (like AoE 3 cities do, but levelling should be ten times slower).
3) COOP play to survive
And just for comfort:
Water draining, rat meat harvesting, alcohol destilling, heating etc should have an option of automating if player has enough ressources. Very annoying to do the same empty moves each day over and over again.
