Hi, I downloaded the game using the normal download file from a different PC and then installed it and later added it to my GOG Galaxy list on my own home PC. I did rather than downloading directly from Galaxy because my internet connection's data cap at home is severely limited.

I've been playing the game for over 4 hours with no problem, but a while ago I had a power outage while playing. When the power came back on and I started my PC again, GOG Galaxy started to download a 415 MB "update" to the game. I stopped that because it's eating my (extremely) limited data cap, which is the entire reason for which I downloaded it elsewhere in the first place. I can't play the game on GOG Galaxy anymore, because the Play button is greyed out since I stopped the update, but I can play perfectly on the regular game shortcut.

So, my question is this: just what the heck is this large file? I looked on my library and the game's download size seems to be the same, and there's no patch to download. The game works fine on its own, without Galaxy, so why does Galaxy believes it has to download such a large update all of a sudden? Clearly the power outage had something to do with it, but there doesn't seem to be any actual damage with the game's files, so I assumed it was just a coincidence and the update would have happened anyway if I just had restarted the PC on my own, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Am I just locked out of playing the game through Galaxy, at least until I do a reinstall (for which I have to re-download the game, since I erased the install file, like a dingus)? Am I overlooking something here? Any help is appreciated.

I havethe same problem (no power outage, though): Galaxy dowloads those 415mb, tries to "patch" the game, then restarts downloading.

Bothered by this behavior I tried to uninstall and reinstall the game through Galaxy. After the first dowload, it tried (without being able) to install the game, then restarted dowloading.

So I stopped the download through Galaxy, removed the files and proceeded installing the game through the executable. As soon as it finished, Galaxy recognized the game and, again, tried to "patch" it dowloading the infamous 415mb.

td;dr: I think it's a bug.
It's probably the "patch" to 1.0.862. There are no patch notes, yet. And for some reason unknown to me the patches are always nearly the size of the whole game.

Your galaxy version should work again when you switch to manual update mode (From the "more"menu next to the "Play" button on the "Settings" screen.

After a while I tried reinstalling Galaxy, now it works!
It's OK, I already finished the game through normal means. No bugs that I remember, so I didn't need any patch.

I'll go for the Galaxy version for a second playthrough in the future, or if they enable Achievements.

Mac or Windows? I am having a similar problem on a Mac: GoG Galaxy tries repeatedly to update the game and fails every time. I tried "Repair/Verify" and it still failed.

If I uninstall/re-install the game through GoG Galaxy, would I lose my save games?

Windows 10. As I wrote in a previous post, I reinstalled Galaxy and now it works fine. On Windows the wizard of the uninstaller asks you if you want to keep your save games, I don't know how it behaves on Mac. I think you should make a copy of the folder containing the save games before reinstalling, just in case.
