I think they are random-generated, and any True Adventure Gamer™ will get the Dust Hoarder achievement quite easily(collect 75 specks of dust).

But I still want to know, how many specks of dust in the game that we can collect?

Im not sure about exact number, 75 sounds plausible.

The number of specs in each room is fixed. Only the placement inside the room ist random. David Fox mentioned on Twitter that the specs will be replaced every 10 minutes.

You need to nearly complete the game to get all specs.

Ah, make sense.

I encountered 1 or 2 specks of dust that was impossible to get, stuck in the border of background.
Someone in the forum also provided a similar screenshot.

I guess we should leave the room for a while, and come back after 10 minutes.

I just checked ~/.local/share/Terrible Toybox/Thimbleweed Park/Log.txt, and there are 75 unduplicated items: Loading: Object 'speck_of_dust_room-*

I think that may be just for people with OCD playing the Steam version but I'm not sure.

Unlock an achievement.

And, I think the count is binding with the room.
You have to collect them in different 75 rooms.

Players often find that they collect new one but the count in todo list is not increased, because they have had collect it in the same room before.
