Seeing as some here might play the original version still and need help I found the following steps worked for me(and may work for you guys as well) :
1. Install the game off of CD/DVD or image, then(with image mounted or cd/dvd in drive still) :
2. Make a backup of thief.exe in the game's folder/directory and download a hex editor off of the net(I used xvi32) and use it to edit the thief.exe file(Start the hex editor and search for thief.exe and load it.....a screen will pop up with the hex code on the left and the plain text on the right. Click the search tab in the hex editor and search[as plain text] for ddraw.dll, and change the first one found to DDFix.dll[case matters here, type it exactly as I did].) Then save it in the hex editor and go to step 3.
NOTE: This method works....the premade exe on the ttlg forums DOES NOT WORK with this version of thief for some reason, so do not use it.
3. Get DDFIX 1.5.12 from ttlg forums here, and dump the files into the main thief directory. Then edit cam.cfg in that same directory and add the following line(without quotes) after the last line in the file(add a space between the last line in cam.cfg and the line you are adding now) :
"game_screen_size 1280 1024"
(where 1280 1024 is where you put the resolution you want to display the game in)
4. Install the Dark Engine Resolution Patch here by copying all files to the thief directory and run darkwidescreen.bat....choose n(to not read the readme) and press enter, then follow the prompts(entering the same resolution you chose before in cam.cfg[to run the game in], as well as the fov[enter 100 here].). Press enter after each choice/typing in each entry. It will then ask if your settings/choices are correct. If they are press y and then enter, then enter again to close the screen. If they aren't, press n then press enter, and reenter your choices.......then when asked to confirm your choices pick y this time then enter, and enter again to close the screen.
5. Run Game using shortcut on desktop(or thief.exe in the game directory), making sure to do so by either right clicking either one and selecting run as admin first(to make videos run during the game)......OR right click either one and click properties, then click compatibility tab and check run as admin box, click apply, click ok, then run the one you just modified(shortcut/game exe) as you normally would by left clicking.
6. Enjoy the game.
7. Optional: In cam.cfg there is a skip intro line.....edit this out after doing all the above if you want to see the intro every time you play. If not then skip this step.
