I realize this could be a monitor thing and my eyes always have to adjust going back to some old FPS's that don't have true lighting/aliasing, etc, but the thing is I jumped into Thief 2 directly after finishing up Thief, which brightness/gamma wise I had absolutely no problems with. Thief 2 on the other hand is just really, really grim and foggy on my monitor.

I've messed with gamma and all the in-game options that I can like Fog, but yeah. It's at the point where raising the gamma more just seems to be ruining the immersion, lol.

So a bit at a loss here, any tips or maybe there's mods that could tune this up a bit?

Fog option and rain options only relate to a couple of levels.... Fog appears in only two levels or so... Rain only appears in one level. They have nothing to do with brightness...

Are you using Tafferpatcher, and have all relevent patches (latest DDFIX)?

Because there is definitely a problem with shadows without DDFIX, and I don't know how compatible the version that comes with GOG is with windows Vista/7...
I did notice other people mentioning in other threads the DDFix it came with was outdated, so yeah I threw in the newest one (in fact I couldn't even get 1680x1050 working with the old one, lol).

I don't have Tafferpatcher though. I don't mind playing games mostly in their vanilla form, but if that would improve the visibility of the game for me I might grab it.

I guess I could play completely in the dark, lol. But yeah.
This is pretty extreme, but there's line in ddfix.ini that says

;ModulateShift=0

Change that to

ModulateShift=1

Or if even that's not bright enough, then ModulateShift=2.
Tafferpatcher is a modular installer, you don't have to install the fan made texture replacements, if you don't want them... I personally stick to the vanilla graphics as well...

It's great though as it makes it easier to change settings in DDFIx though.

Hmm, not sure if this did anything.

Just so weird I have issues with this one, but not the original. I also replayed Jedi Knight last year and don't remember having this kind of issue there either, though I guess Thief relies on the darkness.

Who knows, maybe I'll just have to adjust and play in the dark, with my eyes completely level and centered with the monitor... lol.

Did you remove the ";" at the start of the line?
Oh wow, haha I didn't notice that... nope. Will try that now.

And holy crap! That definitely helps a ton, It's extreme like you said and might diminish the dark factor a bit, but well I want to see the game better, haha. I think that was definitely the answer I was looking for. Looks like I can turn the gamma back down a bit too without losing my vision.

Where is the ddfix? I keep looking through the game files but cannot find it.
ddfix has been deprecated years ago. everything runs natively now.
