I had some trouble getting T2X to work on Windows 8.1, so I thought I would document the process for anyone else out there having trouble.

1. Install Thief 2, I used the default location (C:\GOG Games\Thief 2 - The Metal Age)

2. In your Thief 2 installation folder, there is a file called Thief2_ND.exe. Make a copy of this file, and paste it on your desktop. Rename the copy thief2, and move it back into the Thief 2 installation folder with the Thief2_ND.exe.

2. Install T2X, make sure you point it to where you installed Thief 2, (again, for me, this was C:\GOG Games\Thief 2 - The Metal Age)

3. Allow the installer to create a shortcut on your desktop

5. Click on the compatibility tab, then check the box for "run this program in compatibility mode for," then choose Windows XP Service Pack 3. Then click apply.

Summary: Basically, T2X (and DarkLoader) are looking for the Thief2.exe file, but the file is instead named Thief2_ND.exe. We're making a copy of that file, and just changing the name in order to make things work properly. If you want to be able to launch T2X from DarkLoader, copy the convict.osm and gen.osm files from your Thief 2 installation folder into your T2X folder.

Hey Voodoo, thanks for the link! I didn't have any issues running Thief 2 or 2X, but I'll definitely give this a shot!

Two quick questions:

1. Do you recommend that I use the 212 beta, the 211 beta, or the 1.19 non-beta of Tafferpatcher?

2. What part of my workaround as described is likely to cause issues? The lack of unofficial patches, or the installation directories?

Thanks again!

use the very latest TafferPatcher. your install will lack a cam_ext.cfg in the T2x folder, which will cause a bunch of minor issues, for example resolution switching when going from the game into the menu. also, the t2x shortcut sometimes does not work properly - running T2x as a FM via fmselect is recommended.

Thank you much!
http://www.bogadocious.com/thief.html has a T2X download 'patched and ready for FMSel or DarkLoader. Run it like you would any other FM.' (Though in my experience DarkLoader displays its name as 'Betrayal', which appears actually to be the name of Mission 13. Otherwise it seems to work fine.)

Thanks! I'll have to give that a shot sometime. I can confirm that Voodoo's method works as well. My workaround worked, but if I wanted to use Tafferpatcher or T2Xfix, it wouldn't have.
