Does GOG Galaxy automatically apply the Universal Patch on installation? I'm asking because if I try to install the patch manually it tells me the game isn't installed. I can't figure out how to tell the currently patched version number, however.

easy - check your TG folder for miss7.mis.dml, open it with notepad, if it includes "crushing 1551 wall rotation fix", then you are running the last GOG patch. also, if I remember correctly, unpatched build's exe will be named thief_nd.exe, while the patched build will have a proper thief.exe.

anyway, there is also a newer GOG patch available here, but if you want to get into the all patched up businesses, you are probably better off using TFix anyway - see the sticky.

Fairly useful. My exe is named Thief.exe and the mission 7 file does contain the comment. However, I can't see that that patch is any newer than the one on Gog's download page, and I can't see a sticky about TFix. In addition, first you said that if my folder contains those elements I had the latest patch, then went on to say there was a newer patch. Both those things can't be true and I'm confused.
what you have now is the latest official GOG update (meaning, the latest update that got picked up by GOG and wrapped up in the official installer). I have linked the next/newer update, which includes a newer version of the NewDark engine. I've put it together quite a while ago, hoping that GOG would make it official, just like they did with the previous patch I've gave them (the one you are using now). they didn't so far, so I guess it has low priority.

anyway, the easiest way of staying up to date is TFix, but some people are paranoid about 3rdparty stuff, that's why I'm also putting together the basic patches for GOG each time the engine gets updated, so they can make it official if they want and make those people happy. does not change the fact that it's all 3rdparty stuff, it has always been, and it always will be.

to make it short, just patch up with TFix and unicorns and rainbows are guaranteed.

Thanks for clearing some things up. I will be using TFix, because it seems like a good idea. My only remaining question is that the release notes in my Thief folder claim it's version 1.22 already. Are you sure GOG didn't pick up your update? You've been immensely helpful!
checked the currently available universal update, and it indeed seems to have a bit higher version number than before. will have to double check.

if you haven't patched up with TFix yet, check your TG folder for script-t1.osm, if it's there, then they indeed picked up the last package.

//nope, the standalone universal patch 2.0.3.49 is definitely still just NewDark 1.21. it's possible that Galaxy does install the latest package, I will check later.

so yeah, the Galaxy build of TG is using the latest GOG package (oct2014).

that means if you've installed via Galaxy, and don't care about extra mods or overhauled maps, you are set and ready.

Cool. I installed TFix regardless, but it's good to know.
