Decided to give this game a try after all these years. Downloaded and installed the latest GOG version of Thief Gold. This installed into a GOG folder and automatically puts a Thief Gold shortcut on my desktop. However double clicking this has zero effect.... nothing happens.

I saw there was a "Universal Update" file available too.... so I tried to install that. That just gave me errors in a .txt file.

I then noticed a couple of folders in the "backup" directory which contained "ddfix" and "noddfix" which have Thief.exe files in them. However these just give me a black screen and I have to hard reset my PC.... not good.

What am I doing wrong? I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium if this helps. I have downloaded the latest TFix patch as well but not done anything with it yet till I get the GOG vanilla game working first.
uninstall, delete the game folder, redownload the install file, install again, patch with the official patch and see whether that solves the problem (not being able to install the official patch usually means something went wrong during install).
OK I started from scratch and reinstalled. This time I left the "Universl Update" alone for now. You say to update using the official patch, but which one is this? I thought Thief Gold was already updated with latest patch?

It doesn't matter which .exe I try... both the New Dark exe and the vanilla exe give the same result.... a black screen where I must hard reset the PC. I don't know what to do now.

The readme document states that if I want to play the vanilla game without New Dark then I must copy the two files from the backup folder into the main directory. There is one file called cam.cfg and when I try to copy this over it states that this file is already there (exact same size file). Is this correct?

EDIT: OK so I decided to install the TFIx and see if that helped any. I managed to get both the .exes to start this time. The EIDOS logo appears and the opening movie is played out but when it's finished it looks like it's about to display the main menu. This is where it crashes with the message "Thief II has encountered a problem". Does exactly the same with New Dark .exe and the vanilla.exe.

I'm about to give up on this. Nothing I try works.

I found a new program called TGTool. This was updated just 4 days ago with a latest version. I installed it as required into the folder where my Thief.exe is. It installed a bunch of stuff and gave me a brand new Thief.exe with a different icon. But no.... this still freezes on me with a black screen.

Can someone please give me a straight forward walk through of the order of installation and patches? I've tried about four fresh installs now and I don't know whether to install the "Universal Update" or use TFix or use TGTool or what. The official patch was mentioned above.... what is the "Official" patch? There's so much stuff about this old game floating about the net I don't know what is valid or up to date.
first, now you should have thief.log and crash.dmp in your TG folder - zip them up, upload to mediafire or sendspace, and post the link.

the universal update is the official patch. so;

-uninstall
-delete the game folder
-install again
-use the universal update
-run the game

if it crashes, again, zip your thief.log and crash.dmp, upload to mediafire or sendspace, and post the link.

OK first of all thanks for all your help with this. I appreciate it.

So I deleted the game folder again and started from scratch once more. Fresh install and used the Universal Update. These are the only two files available to download from GOG.com when you buy Thief Gold (excepting bonus content).

Patch applied and started game. It crashes with a black screen again.

Here is a link to my Thief.log file:
Damn... cannot post any links for some reason. Do you know why?

Also, I do not have any crash.dmp file at all in my Thief directory after the crash. Unless I'm looking in the wrong place.
you need to remove http www from the link you are about to post (spam protection). anyway, you can post the contents of thief.log directly, just open it with a txt editor like notepad and copy paste into your post. also, you can try to patch up with TFix and run the game via safemode.bat (the dx6 mode) in the meantime.

any chance that you are using multi monitor setup with an intel gpu?

I am using a Radeon HD7800 graphics card. I dunno about this multi monitor setup you speak of. I have one monitor only.
ok. try to run windowed - edit cam_ext.cfg with notepad, and change
; force game to run in windowed mode
;force_windowed
into
; force game to run in windowed mode
force_windowed
save and exit, and run the game. also, try to rename the movies folder into something else (_movies for example), that will get potential movie related issues out of the way.
Btw I'm pretty sure the universal update is only for old users who already installed the game. The main download should already include everything in the update.
The Universal update puts the game to version 2.0.49 while the main download is 2.0.46. Something like that anyway.

I got the game working now, so thanks a lot for the help. I dunno what it was but I did a clean install of the game, then I applied the Universal Update and it went fine. For some reason when I applied the update on previous instals it kept giving me error messages such as "cam.cfg is not original file". But I'd done nothing to change it at that point.

But this time it went OK and once I applied the TFix then the game would run. All seems fine now so once again, thank you.
sounds like the previous download was corrupted maybe? not being able to apply the universal update would suggest that. anyway, enjoy the game.
