I've been having a fair bit of trouble with this game (I swear the Playstation games alot easier) Anyways, i looked on google and found some tips that sound very handy :) heres the link: http://www.gamesradar.com/cheats/pc/theme-hospital/
The website has some good info too:

Some hints that i can think off :-)

1) Set staff resting meter for staff to 25% and you will almost never have to pay them a raise.
- Remember to build plenty resting rooms!

2) Build a research department as soon as you can and add 2-3 desks inside together with 2-3 doctors with the scientist skill. Start by researching "diagnosis" to "all done", then cure, then treatments and last "improvements". Skip researching "specialization".
- the treatment bar does not go to "all done" so keep an eye on the disease page until all are researched to 100%. then switch to "improvements"

3) Build a training room and train the staff!
- Add plenty of books and skeletons to improve training speed
- Make sure to train surgeons as these are often in need and you need two for the surgical theater.

4) When hovering the mouse over a building that require repair, notice the "strength" and "times used" values. The lower the strength, the higher the risk of getting it destroyed during earthquake. Replace the building if strength drops too low (I usually replace them at around 7-8 strength). If the "times used" value is high, the building just require normal repair by a handyman.
- Researching "improvements" increases the strength level of buildings.
- Add 2+ fire extinguisher to all "repair" rooms to decrease risk of explosion during earthquake.

5) Spread your GP offices throughout the hospital, don't build all of them at the entrance.

6) Remember to build multiple toilets. Nothing is more annoying than to have patients wander halfway through you hospital to go take a dump, then all the way back to whatever diagnosis/treatment building the had to enter next.

7) Hire plenty of handymen!

8) Don't bother with plants, they just take up your handymen's time.

9) Remember to add plenty of benches and drinking machines. I have had a single drinking machine earning as much as 20.000$ during gameplay. They are a good investment!

Feel free to add more if you got any :-)

I read back in the day that plants "clean the air" and reduce epidemics. I always build plenty of them.

I am not too sure if its the case, but from my experience if the corridors where people move and sit are too narrow it leads to people getting more unhappy/sick leading to an increase in puking/littering. I try to get about 4-5 squares in corridor width, 2 for benches/vending machines, 2-3 for walking. Make sure that there are plenty of space and benches outside the rooms that a lot of people, such as GP office and pharmacy. Try to separate the GP office and pharmacy with 2-3 other rooms to limit the accumulation of patients outside these rooms. I often add a second pharmacy together with more GP offices "deeper" inside the hospital so that people don't have to go back to the start for diagnosing or pharmacy treatment.

For a quite large hospital in the later levels i have about 10-12 handymen with 2-3 of them focusing on repair.. Note that i do not use any plants.
EDIT: also, i don't buy the extra hospital space until the very end of a level where i have to increase the hospital value to win the level. Often, a lot of handymen run around in the empty hospital space doing nothing.

At some times i can get quite a few epidemics, but good management and by closing up some of the entrances/exits to the outside i can usually treat them all in time. And instead of having to pay a large bulk of money, i get a large bulk of money in compensation ;-)

Actually books and skeletons do not improve the training speed at all. There are a few other objects that people working on Corsix-TH have tested and not been able to determine an effect for.

Edit: It still might determine the happiness of the staff, I don't think that's been tested yet.

My tips:

- Put the heat on maximum. Place heaps of radiators in waiting areas, so that people are too hot. They will buy more drinks.

- If your hospital has a manageable number of patients, set 'stop diagnosis' to 150%. You'll make a lot more money with all that unnecessary diagnosing. When the number of patients increases, set it back to 100%. Keep an eye on dangerously ill patients though, and move them to the front of the queue and send them for treatment as soon as possible.

- Whenever you see a rat, slow the speed down by pressing 1, then shoot it. Try and shoot as many rats as possible so you can *SPOILER* get to the secret rat level *SPOILER*.
