I wanted to know if it is really that necessary to get the Griffin, Cat, Wolf, and Bear gear. Collecting all of the pieces, upgrade diagrams, and crafting up to master level seems very fetch-questy and tedious and not fun. I was wondering if there is a benefit to doing it though. I currently have the Griffin set at level 2 and am planning on getting it to mastercrafted. Not sure about the rest of the sets though.

Of course it's not necessary. It's your game. Do as you wish. The only necessary tasks are main quest tasks. Is it worth it? Yes. Absolutely. The gear is some of the best in the game, and you get to find all kinds of loot, not to mention the XP.
