Bit of an odd one but when im playing through the early maps im either getting kicked all over or its quite easy. Im part way through the bloody baron story but have broken off to just finish the hunt the witch (which I found quite tough on the mini bosses). Ive just turned lvl 7

Where should I be spending my time or is each map a mixture of enemy strengths.

eg it doesn't take much for me to die when faced with a bandit camp (most have the red skulls next to them)
Red skull above the opponent or the quest marker is usually a sign you shouldn't be there :)

The best advice I can give you is just do whatever suits you, if you get into a situation you cannot handle, you can always go back. Later on in the game you will find random quests you have never paid attention to earlier and will be one hitting monsters, that is normal in open world games with no level scaling.

I'm doing that Witches hunt thing now at Lvl 6 ( a littl over 300 away from Lvl. 7 ). I can say this, it will be a long time before I take Kieran out again. Dates with her are no fun at all, At present, I am struggling with Nithrall.
The simplest way to ensure you are not walking into a fight you don't have a chance of winning, is to open up your Quest log (Default "J" on the PC). There it lists all the quests you have and the levels for each one.

Of course, that doesn't stop your level 7 Geralt from walking into some level 20 monster while you are out exploring the world - but as noted in posts above - you can always walk away from any fight and come back later when you are more leveled up.
