RAM: 4 GB

No matter how much I try to tweak the game, I'm not getting decent FPS anywhere unless I run the game at 640x480 - and even then I'm lucky to pass 30 (also, why bother offering resolutions that low if the text is only readable from 1024x768 onward?). I'd try overclocking if I knew what the hell I'm doing, which I'm not.

I thought I nearly met the minimum requirements, but clearly I'm going to have to upgrade something...

Edit: Adding to the above list, I've tried the NVidia beta drivers and de-installed 3D Vision, which helped some... But not nearly enough.

It should work okay, even on high settings. At least that's what I think. However I get low fps as well sometimes on the recommended settings. CDPR is working on it.
Set the game to your desktop's resolution (which should be your monitor's NATIVE resolution), set the settings to Medium, then manually disable:

SSAO
UberSampling
Motion Blur
All three Depth of Field options (Cinematics, Cutscenes, Gameplay)
Vsync

You will experience tearing without vsync on, but try it anyway.

I think you are joking :P

His PC is pretty weak for this game, it's very demanding. Video card is very, very weak.
I have a 9600 GT 1 GB and I can play fine on medium
whether it's weak or not, the wicer 2 has some major optimization issues. I should be able to play this on high (with some settings turned off... like ssao) or medium (with everything on) and yet I can only play on low, with a low res, and still get 30-35 fps.... if I'm lucky.

Tried this, getting 10 FPS indoors out of combat. I don't even want to know what know what it'd look like outdoors.

Yeah, I feared as much.

look up the performance rating of your video card here. the game is designed for newer more powerful video cards.

You need a new GPU. Sorry!

Would adding one and then linking them (I read something like that is possible) work as well?
SLI is a great technology but it requires two GPU of the same generation. Your card is too old. Besides, TW2 is ill optimized for SLI

What is your budget for an upgrade?

Budget? Zero, really. But if I push it, €100-€200 max.

Well I just looked at the gigabytes. My processor is better though and I think my video card as well (radeon 5830HD)
Witcher 2 is not that demanding as u think. Try crysis series and you will know what isa "video card benchmark tool"
I upgraded to a GT 430, complete with tailored overclocking software should I feel the need to get more out of the card. It's still not very high-end, but considering the fact that one of my older PCs is going to be replaced with a new one some time this year I didn't feel spending more than €60 was really justified.

Now pulling between 25 to 40 FPS at 1024x768 at low settings, which is good enough for my purposes (I never cared much for fancy graphics). Maybe overclocking will net me more, but right now I just want to play the damn game.

Consider my problem solved; thanks for all the help.
