When I start Witcher 2 the launcher comes up.

If I select "Options", then in the options panel I select "Input Settings...", and finally select the "Gamepad" tab, I can freely reassign any or all of the controller buttons/sticks/etc. except for the left stick. In other words, the controller is recognized by the launcher options software just fine.

Now if I return to the launcher by closing out the various option windows, and then start the game by selecting "Launch game", the controller is not recognized at all. If I go into the "control options" menu, the "choose controller" item only shows keyboard and there is no selection for a controller.

Help! Why does the external options menu recognize the controller but the game ignores it?
