I think the best way to do it is to make it impossible to steal if the person is right there. Stealing feels very out of character for Geralt, but I guess it can't be completely removed since this is an RPG after all.

deathcoy: Are dragons immune to Axii sign?
Damn it, Geralt is friends with her father!

At least they should implement that
I disagree about stealing loot from houses. I absolutely hate it when a game makes stealing a crime, it's annoying in my opinion.

If you are a roleplayer and think it feels "out of character" then just don't do it...

Yeah, your opinion is wrong.

I would suggest that Gothic/Risen is the inspiration to improve this area in the next Witcher game.
To be honest, my favorite part of the Witcher games is exploring the cities. Being a fan of the novels, I find it completely exhilarating to just explore Flotsam or Vizima. I was sorely disappointed that the biggest area I had to explore in the whole game was Vergen (at the brink of war no less). For the next installment I'd love to be able to actually visit Tretogor or Oxenfurt. Hell even venturing into Nilfgaard would have been preferable. I loved both games, but I had more fun in Vizima's Trade Quarter than all of the other parts of the games put together. I want to see some civilization in these games in the future. Also, let me travel as I wish. Maybe I'm just spoiled from Elder Scrolls games as far as this goes, and it's really not in the style of a Witcher game, but I'd LOVE to have at least a part of a game that's at least mostly open world. Or maybe an expansion. Add in three or four cities that you can visit with teleportation and I'd be ecstatic. It wouldn't even have to be as Geralt, though I can't really think of anyone who'd be more fun to play. Maybe one of the sorcerers/sorceresses...nah, still more fun to play as Geralt. Or maybe Lambert or Eskel?

I'd rather they tone down the amount of loot all over town, so "can pick it up" remains the same as "ok to pick it up" but there just isn't so much taking orens from 5 places in someone's house. It is just tedious to go around looting everything anyway, especially in the first game.

It is currently awkwardly squished between two loot systems:
JRPG, where it is ok to have sticky fingers but it won't let you grab much.
Sandbox, where you can pick up their silverware but it will piss people off.

I'd rather they just go with the former when it comes to towns. It works better for somewhat predefined characters and linear gameplay. The Witcher games are not sandbox.

If it does go more in the direction of the latter, I'd rather it be a binary than reputation system. Seen stealing = everyone upset. Also you can clearly see if something counts as stealing or not (red hand, thief symbol, whatever).

But what if that happens? Even in a reputation system, what if it hits bottom? Quests are ruined or you must abandon the town, would anyone really accept either of those without just reloading? Guards burst in, you kill them and exit the house, and then they are fine with you because the game can't deal with you slaughtering the town? It doesn't fit into the non-sandbox style of The Witcher at all. I can only envision it being something stupid and even more immersion breaking than it currently is. Better blind AI than stupid silly AI which really drives the gameness of it home.

The game is designed for you to do that. If you don't take objects from the houses you are at disadvantage when alchemy comes to the equation.

If they just don't let you loot in the houses in a future version or game, that means the loot has to be put elsewhere, so the game doesn't unbalance your gameplay and you get the proper ingredients for bombs and stuff.

Besides, stealing in front of the people is just awkward. They don't have any reaction to the stealing, and, in a game with a realistic scope like this one, it feels game breaking.
I want all of the skills we learned to carry over, make the mobs hard! continue the great quests! nothing can touch the quality of witcher 2's quests atm.

Like someone else suggested, they should just don't put any loot in peasants' houses. It fit well when you infiltrate Loredo's warehouse and then, stealing is justified. But outside a quest that requires you to steal something, they shouldn't put any loot in the peasants houses.

There is enough forests, traders and beasts to get your ingredients from, so i think not puting loot in normal houses is the best way to mantain the Lore of Geralt's character and the game to not feel weird.
