So I just started playing Witcher 2 a couple days ago. Great so far! But I have sound problems. :(

First it started where randomly in a dialog scene, the sound would play really slow, like in slow motion. After it happens once it happens to every dialog scene until I quit out of the game and restart it. So it became more and more frequent so I tried playing around with my settings - I tried setting my speakers to stereo instead of 5.1 in control panel but that didn't help.

Eventually I disabled both depth of field options and that seems to have stopped the issue (so far). This is not the best solution because I had good frame rate with depth of field and it looked better - but still worth not having the sound problem.

But then after doing this, I had another sound problem where certain sounds wouldn't play. Sometimes the UI sounds wouldn't play. Sometimes the music wouldn't play. Sometimes the backround sounds in an inn wouldn't play, etc.

So update sound drivers? Not really an option for me because I am using an older Dell computer that does not support Windows 7 x64 while I have that installed, so no drivers from Dell are available - my sound driver is just the one that Windows 7 installed automatically.

So what if I just get a new sound card and disable my onboard sound? Is there an inexpensive PCI sound card that is known to work well with this game? I don't have any extra PCI-E slots....

Some of Creative's X-Fi sound cards (Xtreme Audio, Xtreme Gamer) and the Asus Xonar DS are available as PCI-cards. They are in the lower to middle price range for consumer sound cards - I don't know about exact prices in the US though.

But I'd suggest borrowing an USB sound card/headset from a friend first and check if the problem is actually gone. No use in spending money on a sound card if it doesn't solve anything. :)

I don't know where you're checking for drivers, but try to indentify the sound chip used, then Google for a Windows 7 driver.

if you can't find one, see if there's a Vista driver available, sometimes they'll work.

If you're not sure of the sound chip, there are plenty of programs you can use that will tell you.

Okay thanks I will try that, I was just checking on Dells website I didn't know drivers might be available elsewhere.

Also I was reading through some help guides and I have a Logitech USB headset plugged in but not being used while I'm playing, that could be part of the problem?

Drivers for things like sound cards/chips and video cards are best obtained from the manufacturer and not from Dell or any other OEM.

Regarding your headset, yes they have a lot of problems, do a search here for more info.
I had a similar problem. Try turning the Texture Memory Size down a notch (I went from Large to Medium), I think my sound was dropping out becuase I was running out of memory. This can also fix crashes and make the game run a little better.
