I got a Logitech Dual Action gamepad, and I can't seem to get it to work.
Do I need a 360 gamepad?

A lot of the newer games (console ports or pc native seems to not matter) use only "xinput" instead of supporting the old "directinput" library. If you are buying a new gamepad might want to check their website to see if it supports xinput.

There is one workaround if you want to use older pads though.
This xinput emulator translates old directinput input into xinput commands:

I use an xbox 360 pad, but also use a saitek rumble pad with the xinput emulator.
I tested the saitek & xinput emu with Witcher 2, it works.
Just need to put the emu files into the \bin folder where the witcher2.exe is (default path on win7 is C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\The Witcher 2\bin ).

EDIT: Don't forget to switch to gamepad mode ingame in the options/gameplay menu.

Witcher 2 works great with a gamepad. The UI and the gameplay is pretty much designed for a console-type experience.

The Xbox pad is really the standard PC gamepad at this point. I'm not saying that is right, I am just saying how it is.
@Teknoir,
Thanks for the info, didn't know about directinput and the new xinput.

@StingingVelvet
I know...still thinking about buying one..
I'm using my PS3 Dual shock 3 controller just fine but then again I'm using MotioninJoy and the beauty of it (assuming that you have compatible Bluetooth adapter) is that I can switch between Xinput (aka XB360) and directinput (but the default PS3 setting on it the buttons on the d-pad is not set up right, so you have to go into the playstation 3 option on the gamepad tool and set it up to what it should be and remove the 2 d-pad commands and then click on enable to save) with ease with vibration function if the game supports it.

However from time to time, I have to go under the Motioninjoy gamepad tool driver manager and reload the drivers to have my BT adapter to be recognized or put the BT adapter after the MiJ program (sometimes on a different USB port). Because under the BluetoothPair tab under support feature shows x in every spot, but I only had to fiddle with it after every fresh windows restart (so I just leave it on sleep mode).

Can't seem to get it to work with a Cordless RumblePad 2. I've tried both the 32- and 64-bit DLL's (think 32 is correct since Witcher 2 is a 32-bit binary), and have loaded the RumblePad 2 presets. I've also tried all three settings for Hook Mode (Disabled, Normal, and Compatibility). I've even tried putting the ini and dll in both the top Witcher 2 folder (with the launcher) and the bin folder at the same time (keeping both copies identical, of course). Regardless of configuration the game doesn't seem to detect my controller; the Gamepad tab on the launcher's Input Settings shows everything grayed out, and the Options -> Gameplay menu shows Keyboard as the only available controller.

Any ideas? Anyone using the same controller I am?

Basically, yeah.
What do we expect, though?
I mean, Microsoft runs both the XBox and Windows. ;)

Personally - I'm fine w/ the XBox 360 controller on the PC. *shrug*
It works fine for me.

Since I use Motioninjoy's drivers to use my PS3 pad (don't have a usb receiver for my Xbox pad), I was able to simply use my PS3 pad as an Xbox pad. I imagine many of the other alternative gamepad programs/drivers have similar functionality.

So, to answer the question, "only Xbox 360 pad"? The answer is no, as long as you can emulate it, via software or driver.

That said, I was ready to throw my controller through my screen so I ended up sticking with keyboard and mouse. I should have known, as the only thing I ever find controllers better for (obviously a personal choice) is driving and Street Fighter type games. ;p

I like it as well, and I like having a standard controller so I know it will work with every game and I see the proper button icons in-game. That said I understand where people are coming from when they criticize having a single gamepad on the PC, since it does kind of go against the open platform nature of the PC.

I am using the wireless rumble pad and 360 emulator. The emulator files need to be copied to the the same folder as the game EXE files
Yes, Roadking, those of us who read past the first post already knew that.

I still can't get x360ce to work and have narrowed it down to a permissions issue; it works when I run the game as an administrator. My user account has full permissions on both x360ce.ini and xinput1_3.dll but there must be some other files I need perms on. Anybody have any ideas?
Can still use my PS3 pad if I dont have a bluetooth adapter via USB?.

Thanks in advance.

Internal Bluetooth should work fine.

(There are also third-party PS3 controllers that use RF; they should come with USB dongles. I would expect them to be compatible with MotionJoy and the like too, but haven't tested any.)

EDIT TO ADD: Whatever permissions are affecting my ability to use x360ce as a standard user aren't (or at least aren't JUST) based in the Witcher 2 files; I gave my user account full control of the entire directory (and propagated inheritance) and still no go. So it might be some kind of system hook thing. Don't know; guess for now I'll just run the game as an admin.

If you are considering buyng one, then get a wired one... there still seems to be issues in some games with the wireless type. (hmm should have read the date you posted. :/)

Have you try binding the F5 key and delete key to the PS3 wireless keypad, so far I only been able to bind next signs, next items, and the individual signs to the keypad. The controller works fine, I just wish the keypad have more keys like a real keyboard.
