Hi,this post is for information only for people with modest systems and random crashes

my specs as follows
amd phenom x4 840 3.2ghz
4 gig ram
geforce gtx 460 1gig
vista 32bit
1280x800 resolution

very modest system but the game runs fine with the following disabled

blur effects
motion blur
uber sampling
vertical sync
depth of field-gameplay

other settings of note

i had random crashes before installing the patch and the same crashes after installing the patch.they stopped only after running the 3gb fix at the cmd prompt
Type "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072" and press [Enter]
ive just had an afternoon of the game without a single problem
Need more info about that 3GB switch. From what i read is only for x32 Windows user. Make sure there are at least 4GB of RAM. And it has it's own risk too, certain system might encounter error in certain programs, Windows might be unstable of some user, and the WIndows might fail to boot. The most important and highlighted by most website about this feature:
"Use it at your own risk".

Personally i have tried that, so far no problem whatsoever on my system. But that doesn't mean it's immune from errors. But still credit to OP for finding the solution, it might be useful for some user here.
yes i read the warnings to,i suppose its to cover someones back should things go wrong.
yes its for x32 windows only and systems with 4gb ram installed.
ive ran various other programs since using the 3gb switch (which can be reversed btw),recorded tv in the media centre, used openoffice.org used internet explorer, done a registry scan.had folding at home cpu and gpu clients running, rebooted a couple of times and no problems whatsover
Will CD project fix this issue so you don't have to turn 3gb switch all the time?

Outside their control. All they can do is code a "large address aware" application. You have to set the 3GB switch on your Windows OS before 32-bit Windows will give any application more than 2GB.

Nobody in his right mind would write an installer that set the 3GB switch. It risks breaking other applications or bricking Windows itself. You have to let the user take that risk for himself.

On the 64-bit OS's, a "large address aware" application gets up to 4GB, without any need to tune the OS.
