Although it will be some time before I start applying mutagens, I cannot find any information about their use. By that I mean would it be a good idea to use my Range (+5 to Aard & Igni) in the Arrow Deflection slot?

To me it would make sense that a Range Mutagen that effects Signs would be best used on the Magic Tree, but again, where (and does it even matter where a mutagen is applied)?

It doesn't matter, some skill unlock mutagen slot but they are not bonded to them, you can put a healt mutagen in a sign or sword slot, you will get the same effect. But you should be carreful to choose wisely witch one you want and try to use the highest one as once you put a mutagen, you can't remove or replace it with another one.

Thanks for the info.

btw... the walkthrough I'm using didn't mention the cave (Chapter 1) in the Arachas area, nor did the 'best weapons' guide mention the Robust Cutlass I found inside (random weapon maybe?).
In your opinion, is this cave well known among the players?

(I've found several small caves like this, but this was the first one that had any stuff in it.)

My advice is try to avoid walktrough, i personaly just check the quest list once i clear the map to see if i have missed something.

I dont think there are any random loot in the game, but some of the strongest items are hidden so you have to explore to find them
