I have done both sides and did not use cat at that point, I used it exactly once in 2 playthroughs and decided then that it was more trouble then help. I usually just lit the lamps in the tunnels, those were enough.

When I went through the tunnels to meet Zoltan, the braziers were already lit but they weren't generating any actual light. Plus, there were few, and far in-between.
