Hey

Im at the point where I need to escape the prison and I have STILL not found a fire to meditate at. So I have not been able to level up or drink potions yet.

Have they changed the old system? How do I meditate now?

Pull up your sign/pocket menu. Its the center button...

Open your journal with J, then read through the tutorial entries. That'll explain the interface a bit. Meanwhile, hit Ctrl to open a quick menu and click the middle to meditate. You don't need a fire, you just need to be away from enemies.
