There are a few tweaks for Nvidia users that seem to help out quite a bit. I'll point you to this NeoGAF thread dedicated to performance in The Witcher 2. Some handy tips!
Er...your CPU is lagging way behind your GPU, so upgrade that regardless. And the motherboard is ancient and outdated. But...wait for this week's patch to fix performance.

I agree. That is the processor I had before I switched to a quad core, and it brings a world of difference.

CPU..probably a 955 or 1055t. Motherboards, not sure..must support DDR3 and AM3, though, and you'll have to get DDR3 RAM to go with it..4GB would do it..it's really cheap nowadays. You could probably squeak in at about 200 quid for all of it. I realize it's kind of a big investment, but it pays off hugely. Later on when you have more dough, I recommend upgrading the monitor to 1680x1050 or 1920x1080..LG is a good brand..I believe Samsung are as well..Acer seem to be a decent budget brand.

I recommend doing your own research, though..nobody can tell you what's best for you..these are just my best guesses. Start here: http://www.tweakguides.com/Hardcon09_1.html

If your budget won't run to the best Phenom II's (the 955 and up), you can still get a nice boost from the Athlon II x4 CPUs. But a Socket AM3 motherboard is probably the first upgrade you need; AMD CPUs will underperform in old AM2 motherboards like that one.

If you can afford only one upgrade, upgrade the motherboard and RAM. The difference between AM2 and AM3 motherboards with a Socket AM3 CPU is a big one.

Don't upgrade the CPU without upgrading the motherboard and RAM.

but am still totally buggered about the motherboard though (i have absolutley no idea when it comes to them)
