I have been giving a few users a hard time about using the GOG versions .exe file on a non GOG copy of the game.

I have had conformation from a GOG staffer that GOG in-fact IS NOW OK about they're .exe being used.

My apologies for giving you a bit of grief.

If GOG had just made an official announcement on these forums that it was OK in the first place then that wold have been a damn site easier.
It's cool.

EDIT: I mean, normally, that's the correct behaviour.

this is a good reason why people shouldnt play lawyer when they dont even know the law. Its not illegal in any way shape or form to use DRM-Less .exe's on games you legally own.

Ironically, it is however illegal to hack the DRM out of .exes, but not illegal to use it.

True but you need the owner of the exe's permission.
While I have no issue with it (after all, if you bought the game, why shouldn't you be allowed to use the other .exe to give your game better performance?), I wonder about where the GOG .exe came from. It seems someone had to provide it from their legally bought GOG game, and I believe it's strictly prohibited by GOG rules to share your files. So someone broke the rules. I'm surprised GOG is cool with that aspect, but if they are, kudos to them for endorsing a solution that at least gives their paying customers a fix they can use in good conscience.

what are you apologizing for? until they made the announcement, it wasn't ok and you were justified in giving them shit.

Hum. Apparently Michal K. is saying that CDP RED is fine with this. I should go and clear things up, and then I'll post to the fora with an answer.

Yes, but I'm the marketing guy. It may be we've talked this over with CDP RED and decided that we're okay with this and I don't know about it because I'm the director of PR and marketing, not bizdev.
Yeah when you are posting on GOG's forum it's pretty much assumed that GOG can handle policing and advising on the product they sell. They don't need you, if they do, I'm sure they will hire someone to do so.

Yeah, I've seen that reported elsewhere, and like I say, I've no issue with it. But my point is where are people getting that .exe from? Someone had to upload it from their GOG files, which is a no-no by GOG's rules. (You're not supposed to share your game files). Again, no big deal to me.

This really depends on where you live, but in most countries it's perfectly legal and you don't need any permission Until the DMCA in the USA you could even legally remove DRM if it prevented you from using a product.. I really dont see why CDPR would object to this and more importantly i don't get why any user would take it upon themselves to play CDPRs or GOGs lawyer.
Whatever lets users who bought the game play it easier and better is cool in my book. Kudos to GOG for being cool with that too! Damn I love the ethics of this place :)

And yet it is illegal. In my country. Which is not your country. So while I agree with you about people playing smart...oh the irony, do you get it? XD

Bottom line: Different countries, different laws. ;)

I may also point out that there is a difference between being right and being law abiding. I think it is - and was even before the official statement - absolutely right to use that exe for non GOG-version - considering the huge performance drop with Securom infested executables - while on the other hand I know that it is legally forbidden.
