I just downloaded it through the GOG downloader and I tried to start it for the first time. I saw the first option box (Launch Game, Launch Adventure Editor, Register Game) but when I click Launch Game, it crashes. The error comes up: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_35.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I don't really want to re download, since it's already sucked up 3.5 hours or my life. Any quick fixes?

go to your start , run or windows key + r
type dxdiag and see what happens.

a screen should pop up mentioning the direct x version you have.

Install the latest one as the first post mentions.

That should solve the problem.

if not , uninstall your directx version.
Steam once screwed it up by installing 3 different versions in the past.
then reinstall again.

cjgreen is correct. DX9 is needed for some older games, and can be installed at the same time as DX10 or DX11. So actually the "latest" DirectX is not what you need, you need the latest DirectX 9.

Update : Found Dx9c on the web, but didn't solve my problem... Still get the "The program is not working" screen after trying to start the game.

DX11 and DX9 are totally seperate and co-exist side by side - try the redistributable version of DX9
