All,

I am finally coming around to playing The Witcher. It's been on my shelf for a LONNNNNG time and I am finally going to get into it (plus, I reckon I'll pick up the 2nd here today as well).

I tend to enjoy game series that have an accompanying book series as well and plan on reading the novels. My question is this:

From a timeline perspective, where does The Witcher (game) fit in? I understand that Blood of Elves is the first novel. Does the game take place before or after (or during!) the novels?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks all!

The first Witcher game begins five years after the novels end. The second Witcher game begins a few months after the first game ends.

I think TW1 is a special gem, and I hope you'll enjoy the game.
Thanks for the response! I did some additional independent research and that sounds about right. I finally downloaded and installed...so should start playing tonight or tomorrow, time depending. It'll be good! Thanks for your help.

By the way, I highly recommend reading the short story included with the game. This is the first Witcher short story that was written, so you don't have to worry about reading anything out of order, and not only is it a great story but it's also referenced in the game. The game will tell you what happens in the story anyway, but I thought it was a nice intro before the game starts.
The game is not canon so you can't really place it on any official time line.

It fits as fan-fiction with a licence that is put into the time-line after the book series ended. Original author does not know anything aout the games and does not like the idea of resurrecting Gerald of Rivia. Seems like for him the story is told and finished.

No matter, overall the games seem to fit very well into the world, and CDPR did a good job with the story and atmosphere.
