So I'm very excited to purchase Witcher 1, however for reasons not important I won't be able to play this on my PC. I want to play it on my laptop instead and was wondering if a geforce 720m is sufficient? Resolution doesn't really matter, I don't expect to run it on 1080p. So any other resolution is sufficient (like 1280x768).

And yes I checked the recommended system requirements, but these specs are pretty old and not sure how to compare them with my current card.

Other specs 8GB memory, CPU is Core i7-4500u.
I was able to play Witcher 1 on laptops with both a Radeon X700 and an nVidia 9500M GS - both of which are significantly less powerful than a 720M (according to notebookcheck.net).

If I remember correctly, the X700 was barely able to run the game (lowest settings, resolution like 960x600 or even less, and still had some slowdowns), but playing with the 9500M was fairly comfortable.

Your card is much better, so as long as you don't go overboard on settings and resolution you shouldn't have any problems.
the compute power of the gpu should be enuff to run the game, but the limited memory bandwidth might make it sensitive to AA/AF and other effects. im using an AMD APU (A8-3500m) and that's pretty bandwidth limited too. turn off AA (and use the SMAA injector instead) and maybe go for 4x AF. even with these settings it is still somewhat choppy but playable. with 4xAA it was like a slideshow in some parts.

You can definitely run it. Not maxed out, but it will look fine. Have fun!

P.S. I used this info: http://www.gog.com/forum/the_witcher/change_save_game_location and installed on my desktop and laptop. Then I could play it on awesome graphics and not-awesome-but-portable. You may want to consider that if you have the ability to do both.

its not about the graphics. in combat, timing counts (which i don't like) and fps drops can really mess up the game. ive decided not to play on the laptop.

I ran the game on almost full details with a 9600M (that's a 2007 or 2008 GPU). I think I played it on a 720p resolution, everything maxed out but no depth of field (which is messed up in this game anyway) and no AA. Was perfectly playable. Of course it's gonna work maxed out on your GPU, no matter what some of the weirdos here say. Seriously, what's wrong with you guys? He wants to play a 2007 game on a friggin' 2013 gaming GPU.
