Downloaded The first Witcher and the folder that the downloader created has 207 "chunks". Is it safe to say these are autonomous and if I DVD them (3 dics probably, over 10 gigs) then replace them in a folder down the road I should have no issues reinstalling?

Thanks in advance.

It's a bug, the chunks from part3 are not deleted after completing the download. If all .bin files and .exe compiled successfully you can get rid of them.
You can backup the files anyway you want, as long as you'll put them in the same folder before installation. Or check out this post if you would want to install directly from DVDs.

You should have five .bin files and one .exe file. Those are the ones you need. You can throw away the .chunk files.

If you have a portable hard drive, or a USB flash drive (16GB or more), you could copy to that and reinstall directly, without having to copy the files back.
It's been reported that you can split the .bin files across two DVD's, and when you run the setup, skip the verify integrity or it will fail.

So just as you stated, the bins assembled alright but the chunks for bin 3 never got deleted. The problem I am having is that Windows 7 is now saying I can't delete the chunks, citing that files are corrupted and unreadable Error 0x80070570. Suggestions?

EDIT: Nevermind Check Disk squashed 'em.

I've been searching around and this seems the closest thread to my issue -

I downloaded The Witcher using the GOG Downloader, but I've got over 800 files in the folder, and even though the program says it's verifying and combining files it doesn't do anything.

Any trick I can use to get around this, or do I have to download it again? Hoping I don't have to burn through another 8gigs of downloads seeing as that's a third of my monthly limit.

(I actually bought and downloaded the game when GOG first released it, but only just got a new computer that can run it last night.)

When it's done verifying and combining files (if you have a fast connection, it can take longer to do this than it did to download), you'll be left with 5 .bin files and one .exe file. At that point, you can destroy any .chunk files that are left over, and run the .exe file to install the game.

Archive those six files (the 5 .bin and the one .exe).
The downloader says it's combining the files, but it doesn't actually do anything. I still have over 800 files in the folder even though I've run the downloaded folder through the downloader three or four times.

Is there any other trick I can use to get the chunks to combine or do I have to download from scratch again?

Do you have any .bin or .exe files at this point? Or only .chunk files?

If the downloader simply will not combine the files, go back to your bookshelf. You'll find individual downloads for each of the 6 files you need. Download these using your browser and don't bother with the downloader.

I've got the exe and the bin files but the bins are all 0kb. I downloaded it on one computer and transferred it to another, so I think the problem was with the old, crappy computer that I did the downloading with.

Yeah, I'd decided that if I needed to download again I'd use the browser links this time. The downloader is really quick, and has worked great for other games (even Fallout: Tactics which is 1.6Gb), but I won't risk it again with the Witcher.

If you are brave and have access to a Linux host or live CD, and you have all of the chunk files, you can recombine the chunks yourself. I've done this before. I'll post details if you want them.

But if you can tolerate doing the download from the browser, that is the simple (though costly if you have a quota on your download use) way.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'll just download again. My download usage gets reset on Monday, and I only get slowed down if I go over, not charged, so I should be able to get it over the weekend without too much hassle. If I'm really lucky I won't get slowed down either, but I'm sure I must be getting close to my limit...
