I've been playing The Witcher recently but it suddenly started not loading, after clicking 'launch game' in the launcher the screen goes black for a second or two then returns to the desktop with the following error 'The witcher has stopped working'

it does this EVERY time I try to load it now, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and great it ran fine and I played for an hour or so, saved my game and quit. the day after I want to play again and back to squre one 'The witcher has stopped working' over and over and over.

Just to try something out I copied my saved games and uninstalled it again, then reinstalled it and copied back my saved games. it loaded fine and I played for a good 2 hours.

Today I come back and guess what.. YES! the same damn error.. this is insanity! I can't reinstall it everytime I want to play!?!?

Can anyone help?

Athlon II 620 (4x 2.6ghz)
Windows 7 32bit
4gb ram
Radeon 4670

its not like sometimes it runs and sometimes it errors.. if always works fine after a reinstall but after I've closed the game it NEVER works again unless I reinstall.

Look in your witcher/system folder for an ERR/LOG TXT file and if it exists attach it to your next post . It may give some clues as to why it stops working .

it won't let me post the whole thing, its too long so I'll try to do it in sections.

I`m seeing some Tages loaded modules and there shouldn`t be any . You might try going to the Tages website and click the 5.5 toward the bottom of the page to update them and then remove them .

For future reference when attaching a file to a post use the attach button just underneath the dialog box .

Thanks for the help but its still the same, won't run at all unless I totally reinstall then it only works once.

Just to be sure, are you installing / running as administrator? Also, did anything change on your system around the time the game stopped working? Was there a Windows update, or did you install / uninstall anything?

Another thing you might try is Tweak UAC and set to quiet

Hi sorry for being slow to reply, I was replacing my cpu heat sink with a new and bigger one.

Nothing had changed at all, yes there have been some windows updates but if I am honest they are still telling me to install them, I've been lazy and ignored them.

and yes, its run in admin mode.

Tried it again today, not working at all, reinstalled it ran fine.. played for almost 2 hours, saved and quit.. and again its now not loading.. ridiculous. Just tried that, thanks for the suggestion.. but sadly no change.

Did your computer restart in between quitting the game and trying it again? Or can you literally save, quit, then immediately start the game up again and it doesn't work?

If your computer isn't rebooting in between then it seems like somehow quitting the game is causing the error, but I'm not sure why that would be.

Are you running the GOG version or a different version? If it's not the GOG version, are you patching the game each time you install?

I can't say for sure 100% but yes, I think the pc restarts between me trying. ie I re-install it, play it for a while, do other things then turn off and try to play the next day. so yes most times the pc has been reset or turned off.

No its not patching, well it didn't say it was anyway.

If you bought from GOG there is no need to patch, it's already the latest version.

if it's not too much trouble, you might try to reinstall, save, quit, then immediately launch the game again and see if it works. That way we can determine if the game really only runs once or if rebooting your machine is what causes it to stop working.
