I picked up the original version of The Witcher 1 quite a few years ago in 2017. I have not had a lot of time to play it as I have a family, a house, and two jobs. I slowly worked my way through chapter one over a number of months, the game had not been challenging. Then I ran into the final boss fight with the hellhound at the end of chapter one and bounced hard. I got absolutely crushed in the fight. I put the game down and did not play it for many years.

A couple of years ago I tried the fight again and lost hard. But then I did some reading and made a few changes to my tactics. First I switched to group style instead of fast and still lost.

A while later I tried again with updated tactics after finding out about the fight always happening at midnight. I added a thunderbolt potion and this time I did much better although I still lost.

A while later I tried again with updated tactics. I added a spectral oil and actually won the fight only to be surprised by the second fight which I was very hurt and lost.

This morning I tried again. I again updated my tactics with adding a swallow potion to the thunderbolt potion and spectral oil. I have improved my tactics and had gotten much better in using Aard and learned how to double click on direction keys to roll or jump out of trouble.

Today I finally beat this fight and now I can move on and explore the rest of the game.

It's been a very long time i haven't played Witcher 1, which i completed a few years ago.

But i remember that fight, and that sum up that experience for me too, that battle with the Beast was a very noticable difficulty spike and my character that had no problem with just sword killing anything up to then got crushed so many times until i started to use other options than only the sword like i did previously

It's probably the only chapter 1 fight in which fighting like a Witcher is -required- : drinking potion to prepare, using witcher signs and not only just sword, using any sword enhancing oil, rolling around to escape the bazillon of extras that would lock stun you, etc...
Probably the battle is made harder by you thinking you need to protect Abigail, while in fact she does not need that as she will just revive during the fight after getting killed
Congrats! This is a very special game and I am sure you will enjoy the fascinating story.

I never had any problems with the Beast because this was my first action RPG ever and I played it on the easiest difficulty, but several people have mentioned over the years they found this a tough fight. Kudos for persevering and beating the boss!
