Is there built in support or do I have to go through the hassle of setting up a profile? (Just asking before I go through the trouble of downloading it, as if there is no built in support, I think I'll choose something else to play next. Not feeling like playing with the profiler for hours before starting my next game.)

No, the first witcher game never had support for controllers. It was a PC only game and was never developed with controllers in mind.
Unfortunately not. It does play reasonably well after configuring those profiler thingies. But its not a controller option I would recommend to be honest.
