So I've tried both Steam and GOG versions and neither will work, with both producing the same error (if I get one) It's just a generic "game has stopped working" error so it's not the usual regarding minimum system requirements.

When I don't get an error, I get a black screen for a couple of seconds, nothing to indicate the game is loading and just returns to windows.

I've tried several fixes from renaming the .exe, setting compatibility options, enabling legacy options and loading the game from Djinni (which also doesn't work as this produces the same error when I try and load it. The digital comic works though, but that's everything :(

I really want to play this before I move to the sequel and wild hunt. I've read that it's unnecessary, but I want decisions I make in the first game to carry over.

Before I give up, does anyone have any other ideas?

My system has an intel i7-5930k CPU @ 3.50GHz, 16GB ram and x2 Nvidia Titan X cards. I've tried to load it with SLI disabled and enabled and neither makes any difference.
I have the same problem, I've bought limited edition of trilogy, I've played The Witcher (1) about 1 hour and everything was ok, but guess what? Two weeks later, today, I want to play, and I have the same problem -> black screen, and error "game has stopped working".

I've tried compatibility options etc., I've reinstalled game, but problem exist.

PC Specs:

MSI Z87-G43
Intel Core i5 4670K
ASUS Radeon R9 280X 3GB DirectCu II Top
8GB DDR3 GoodRAM
Seasonic 750W

Windows 10 PRO x64

I have a solution for the AMD cards, you have to roll back to 17.11.1 drivers, in fact the new drivers give problems with this game.
Having the exact same issue.

Edit: Rolled back my AMD drivers fixed it for me as well. Is there some sort of way I can play The Witcher: EE with my old driver while keeping it updated for other titles? Is that important?

Hi,

I made a post about this issue:
https://www.gog.com/forum/the_witcher/amd_gpu_users_with_crash_issues_directx_opengl_wrapper

Please help us drum up support in the linked reddit thread. Posting on AMDs forums seems like a bad idea, they are moderating it and removing complaints!

So far the only issue is a driver downgrade or the openGL wrapper. Please give it a try and let me know if it helped.
For the OP, to see what's going on, check the error log inside:
Witcher folder\System\errlog.txt

zipplet has you know AMD is already working on a fix and all it took was telling the driver team director on twitter what was happening. About what happened on AMD forum, i'm sure the forum modorators were not removing complainsts with no reason or to hide them, perhaps people used bad or agressive language and so they deleted the threads.

Personally i don't browse that forum, so i'm not sure if that was the case but AMD lives and dies on its image and i'm pretty sure, they would not destroy their reputation by trying to "hide" obvious problems, specially on famous games, this is a serious problem that many other games also have, is on their best interest to solve it and they are doing so.
Yes I'm glad AMD is now working on this. They were censoring posts on the AMD forums and locking threads; that has now stopped.
An alpha driver is now available for those harmed by this bug, please give it a try:

Well I'm still having no luck with this wretched game. Continually finding possible fixes for different versions is annoying me as it means uninstalling either GOG or steam version and installing the other only to find it not work.

I've haven't got an errlog in my witcher folder, the game doesn't seem to generate one. I do have a crash.dmp but when I try and open this with a text editor it's mostly garbled nonsense.

I've bought a physical copy of the game so we will see what happens with that when it arrives.
I've heard about possibly disabling full screen through the reg edit, but the Witcher folder doesn't have the fullscreen entry in it so I can't change it. I tried adding my own, but I don't know how the word full screen is written (if I don't have the accurate wording, I assume it doesn't work)

Can someone please check their regedit for me and upload a photo of how the file looks?

I recommend starting with a clean install of the GOG version. I am using that version.

Open Regedit:
- Press Win+R
- Type regedit and press enter
- You might get a prompt asking if its OK to let Regedit make changes. Say Yes.

Navigate on the left hand tree view down this path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\CD Projekt RED\Witcher\Settings

Make sure you clicked on Settings or the right hand pane will be empty.

On the right you should see a lot of settings. Look for FullScreen. If you see it, right click it and select Modify, then change Value data to 0 and click OK.

If you could not find FullScreen but you do see other settings, create it by right clicking inside the right hand pane, selecting New -> String Value and you'll see New Value #1 appear. Rename it to FullScreen. Then follow the above steps to make sure the value is set to 0

If you still have trouble and you want an export of my registry settings for The Witcher, I can provide a reg file that has the game launching on my system. However, disclaimers ahead: Before importing a reg file that someone else provides make sure you read it in notepad/etc and understand what it does before applying it (general security rule).

Thanks for your advice, I successfully solved the problem.
