I have a little problem.
I am in the cave before the beast fight and am trying to make specter oil (keep getting thrashed by the beast). I do not have the recipe so I am wanting to experiment.
However I can not even get that far.
In the alchemy menu every option is grayed out. Step 1 says to drag a base into the slot, but all my alcohols and grease items are gray and I can not select them. (I have goose fat and plenty of strong alcohol). For the recipes I have they are all gray as well.

I do not want to know how to beat the beast, I just want to know if there is anything I am missing for this alchemy. Never tried to mix a custom item before.
Does alchemy simply not work in the cave before the beast fight?

Alchemy works just fine in the cave.

You have to have the potion-making or oil-making talent, the recipe, the base, and the ingredients. Then you have to meditate.

Potion making is a story-based talent that you get in the Prologue, so everybody has it. Oil making is a talent you must spend to get: it's on the Level 2 Intelligence branch.

If it's in your recipe book, you must have the recipe. That can't be the problem.

You say you have the bases. For 4-ingredient or 5-ingredient recipes, they must be of adequate quality. The only 4-ingredient recipe that you'd be concerned about this early is Swallow.

You have to meditate. You can't get to the alchemy menu unless you're meditating. Abigail's fire should be just fine for meditating.

The last requirement is the ingredients. Since everything else (except not actually having the oil making talent yet) is unlikely at this point, this is the most likely cause of the problem. Make sure you have the ingredients you need.

Yep, Oil preparation was missing.
I did not even notice it last time I played. Must have just selected it and kept going.
Now I know I will just try to get by without it and rely on my superpumped aard sign for the beast.
Thanks for the quick solve
