What happened to the Whispered World? I looked in my games collection today and saw that the game wasn't available for purchase anymore. What's going on?

Since the other Daedalic games are still present I assume it was the result of bad sells.

There's a special edition coming out on Steam on May 6, so the original version was possibly removed a bit early before being replaced.

I don't buy that. If that were the case they would do what they usually do and sell it as part of an indie promo to boost sales. They commonly do that to get more people to buy certain games.

There's also the fact GOG.com hasn't officially given a reason yet. They're up to something or have been late in giving a reason why they've taken it down... which they have never been before. In fact they have often been early in giving bad news about game removals to give us time to get them such as what they did with the Guilty Gear games.

Plus I've yet to hear of a game being removed due to bad sales. All the reasons I've read about games being removed is due to legal issues or because of copyright hassles. I've done research and that is true but there's more. The game's been taken off Steam but a page for the special edition is now up. It says the special edition will be out May 6th. It'll be added back to the GOG catalog then hopefully.

The fact GOG.com hasn't announced any bad news about having to remove it indefinitely makes me inclined to agree with your hypothesis.

Its a $5 limited time upgrade unfortunately...

5$ (half of the game's original price) for a "special edition" that is essentially a commentary track? and for a game that is one of the weakest Daedalic games? that pretty insulting.

I have to say I've been disappointed recently by how greedy Daedalic became (see the splitting of the Edna & Harvey bundle) that is real shame because I really like their adventure games but I don't intent to buy anymore from them until they change how they treat their customers.

Well, at least the game is still on my shelf. But I find it bit odd that it has been taken down from sale without any notice.

We already got Monday promo and news about some price drops, but there's still no official word from GOG about the removal of The Whispered World from the GOG catalogue. It makes me wonder even more, what's going on. Usually GOG has been quick to announce when they have removed titles.

I wrote to Daedalic support and just got an answer: it looks like they are stepping back ! Extract:
"I completely understand where you are coming from and I'm glad to tell you that you will NOT have to pay for the Special Edition of The Whispered World; that upgrade will be for free if you already bought the game on Steam, GOG or similar shops.
These new information will be spread as soon as we can and hopefully it will reach everyone who is currently disappointed by the "old" news.

They're essentially upgrading it then to something slightly better than before. This isn't new. GOG.com's done the same with games like Syndicate so they include their official expansions but they never took them off the catalog to do that. This is the first time I've heard of them doing this.

I'm still surprised they didn't at least give some kind of better warning before they took it down. But given all the weird things Daedalic's been doing I will not blink an eye if they're behind that.

The removal of the game was done as per Daedalic request (they also remove it from Steam).

Anyway, the game title was change at my shelf (although the installation files are still the same), I expect the new version to arrive at GOG in a few hours.
