Not sure what forum posts you're seeing, but the new GOG version does specifically have updates to support larger resolutions. I'm on a 16:9 1920x1080 which is supported natively in game using Direct3D.

Could crank it up to 4K if I wanted but this comes with the unfortunate and inevitable side effect of the font's as well as the the HUD icons' size going down rather drastically.
Settled at 2K instead which, to me at least is tolerable without having to get too close to the screen in order to read anything.
