I can't imagine anyone buying them. Usually acquisitions take place before complete implosion, don't they? The only thing they have to offer this point is their past catalogue of games. Even that is iffy - since they are all licensed properties. Could be wrong though. Plus, I think Telltale is a horribly damaged brand now.

I just don't understand how a company could be so poorly managed as to let things transpire as they have.

They would have to own something worth acquiring in order to be worth buying for someone. The problem is they don't actually own any IPs. Everything they've been doing is licensed properties.
