Landlord Update Teaser

Hey there landlords!

We have been working hard to bring you the next big update on our roadmap these past few months. The landlord update will mark an important milestone for all of us as we pass the roadmap's halfway mark and are getting closer to the 1.0 version
! This major update brings many new features, content, excitement, and a little something that happens to be a very highly requested system by the community.

https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34459373/089a03e35a6777813ec7e7c954b7a855775bf5cd.png

Let's start with the little something, which is, well, not that little. We're introducing a new Phone App to manage your properties and look at ones available for purchase; no more scrolling endlessly through the whole map to find that green dollar symbol! What's more exciting is that along with the new app, we're changing up how properties are bought and sold (yes, sold!).

https://i.imgur.com/UdcbAMj.gif

All properties will now be available to purchase via auctions
. Each purchase will now involve more gameplay elements as Uncle Steve himself will now dress up for the occasion! You'll be able to walk around the property first, evaluate how much it's worth, before you take part in a bidding war against other landlords. Finally, the update will also allow you to sell your own properties
through a similar system, this time featuring Steve as the auctioneer himself.

https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34459373/752db76f37d768ee670fa1f221e113c2ecd6c5d1.png

But let's move to the next item on our list. A vast assortment of new jobs, which includes new Elite jobs and a newly introduced type of jobs, will be added with this update. For example, there’s a new Elite contract job for a botanist who will want their place to be full of plants and other exciting items as if it was the Palmenhaus Schonbrunn itself! Overall, we will be adding over 90 new jobs
altogether, which should alleviate some of the repetitive gameplay issues. Of course, we plan to still keep adding even more new jobs throughout the development, so don't worry about that!

https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34459373/faacb916a554e03dbe566003b40c6e47134e5013.png

With the addition of new jobs as we mentioned we would be bringing you the new type of job called Puzzle jobs. These jobs are for the more challenge-seeking players or simply those who want a break from the complete renovation jobs. With the Puzzle jobs
, you will have less room to work with and yet more items to put in. Note you will not be able to edit the room layouts to make them any bigger. These jobs are where the challenge begins to see if you can fit all the listed items in the room, which may require you to think outside the box and use that reset button a few times here and there until it all just fits. Are you up for the challenge?

https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34459373/e4633efa7eb3260c350d1be1134c1ec20dc0bbc8.png

Since we've been putting more jobs and Elite contracts in the game with each update, we decided that Elite contracts needed a little more spice to them. So instead of just taking them for the money, you will now be able to unlock Elite job items
each time you complete them. To unlock the full set of job items, you will need to complete each one three times. After unlocking these items, they are yours to use as your own furniture. You will notice these items scattered around in your renovation tab when renovating for jobs or your properties.

https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34459373/b20443d352ab96041c864e400e945abe149682dc.png

Another thing that's going to be touched up in the update is the main storyline. To make the early game smoother we added two new objectives and tweaked the cash flow quest
to be less of a hurdle. Moreover, the update features important quality of life changes, including refreshing the prestige value in the room panel with each item purchase, double-clicking the item to move it, and, oh, improved loading times
! Certain configurations should see up to a 50% improvement on the new patch.

And that's it for today's teaser! Landlord Update
will go live in a few weeks' time and we can't wait to hear your thoughts about it! Until then, stay tuned!

The Tenants - Landlord Update
Hello there, Landlords!

It's time for another major update! This time we're back with one that everyone's been waiting for quite some time, the Landlord Update! Introducing possibly the most requested feature by the community, apartment selling, today's update drastically enhances the gameplay as you know it, adding on new layers of interaction with the game and a plethora of new content to explore. To celebrate the occasion, The Tenants is now 25% off!
Let's dive right into it!

New Apartment Selling & Buying
The biggest changes in this update are by far related to how we look at properties in the game. We've always intended for The Tenants to have a more managerial style of gameplay at the very top of our gameplay loop, with players buying multiple properties, investing into them, renting them out, and eventually flipping them for profit. This dynamic was not possible to achieve without a number of key features, including the ability to sell apartments and the revised buying system. Both utilize auctions, a new interactive way to handle all your purchases and sales, where you'll get to bid against other landlords!

To make investing and progression more meaningful, players will now have to upgrade the so-called property limit, which describes the number of properties they can own at any given time. You'll find all about it, including a list of all upcoming and ongoing auctions in the area, in the new Properties app on your phone. Be sure to check it out!

Note: For players with existing save files who own more properties than their current limit allows them to, the game will prompt you to sell a number of units of your choice to convert your save file to a landlord update compatible version.

Job Overhaul

Jobs are an essential aspect of the game. As you venture into the landlord update, you will notice that the jobs have changed. You may see that all jobs that once were are no longer there or have been revamped in one way or another. Alongside doing this to existing jobs, we have also added new jobs, so over 90 new jobs are available in the game.

With new jobs come new requirements called prestige scores. We have decided to remove “decor” from jobs as it felt disconnected from the rest of the game. Adding prestige scores instead will make the game more consistent between jobs and your places, as scoring will be the same throughout both.

Moreover, we have added a new type called puzzle job. You will be challenged to think outside the box to fit the requirement task list into a small room supplied to you in these jobs. Are you up for the task? If so, try not to hurt yourself thinking!

Job Rating Changes
We've been closely monitoring the feedback related to job ratings, and the thing that kept coming up was that the game more-or-less forced players to keep using the same items over and over again (the most expensive ones). In the previous updates, we've added the Tags that didn't work exactly as planned since they were regarded as a separate rating category, and the old issues were still present for the other categories.

However, with this update, we've made bigger changes to the whole rating system. We've removed the Decor and the Tags categories, adding the new Prestige category in their place as previously mentioned. Furthermore, we've changed how the game rates the Required Furniture, Preferred Furniture, Walls, and Floors categories. Now, these categories don't consider the given item's price; instead, they focus on using the correct tags (if available) and avoiding placement issues.

The overarching goal here was to remove the focus on expensive furniture and materials, and enable players to use a wider variety of items while doing renovation jobs. Of course, this is an intricate system, and we're eager to hear your feedback on the changes. We plan to keep tweaking and balancing it in further updates.

New Unlockable Items

Another exciting feature of the new update is the new unlocking system for Elite Contract jobs! You will be able to unlock the complete set of unique job items for each contract by completing it three times. Each successful job will yield a portion of them, making each one more than worth the hassle while giving you a reason to come back to them to get the full lineup!

Landlord Points

One thing that we wished we had introduced right from the very beginning, was a second currency. With this new currency added, instead of using money for everything, you will now be required to use Landlord Points on a number of in-game features, such as gifting, sabotaging, and services. No more spending real money to boot your most hated tenant!

In the future, we'll be looking at adding even more avenues to spend your landlord points on, so make sure to keep an eye out for that!

New Events

It's been a while since we added any tenant events to the game, and it seems like our tenants have managed to come up with a number of really interesting issues to bug you about during your gameplay. New events are all uniquely tied to specific tenant archetypes, and they all can involve Steve in one way or the other! And so, alcoholics might forget their way to the bed while artists will message you asking you to drop by to pose for their new painting. Plenty of fun ahead in Wondersville!

New Tenant Archetype - Magician
It wouldn't be a major update without a new archetype coming to town! Magicians are all about gaudy appearances and equally ostentatious magic tricks. Although, with enough gigs lined up for the month, they can be pretty good at paying rent on time! Make sure to treat them well, or who knows what can happen to a landlord they deem problematic.

No update would be complete without a batch of key quality of life changes and improvements to the existing mechanics. We've focused a lot on improving loading times
and the general loading pipeline, which in the past could cause crashes for some of our players. Important balance changes have been also pushed, lowering the $12k cashflow quest to $8k, while adding two new quests in the Slums in between to make the transition to the Suburbs smoother.

We're very excited to get this update out for you to play with! Some of the features released today have been in the works for months, designed right at the beginning of the development, and it's incredibly rewarding to see them come to fruition. We hope you enjoy it, and we can't wait for your feedback!

The Tenants - Spring Update

Hello there, Landlords!

We're back with a new update outside our regular Early Access roadmap schedule, bringing you some of the highly requested features! We're also celebrating Spring with a time-limited in-game event that will take you on a wild egg hunt and reward you with unique themed decorations. All right, let's go over what you can expect to find in this update!

*Egg Hunt event

Today we're beginning our Easter Egg Hunt Event, which will last for two weeks. Steve's been hard at work hiding all the Easter eggs around the Slums district for you to search for. Make sure to find them all, as collecting the whole set will reward you with a unique Easter decorations item set!

The Tenants: Egg Hunt
is a time-limited event that will take place in the slums from April 21st to May 5th.

*Creative Mode overhaul

We finally had the time to properly work on the Creative mode and make it into the game mode that we had initially envisioned it as. Now you will be able to fully customize your playthroughs by increasing the starting cash, reducing the number of events happening to your tenants, disabling the tutorial, and more!

For your convenience, we have also added a couple of presets to choose from if you're unsure what settings to go for.

Note:
Achievements will no longer work in Creative Mode due to the scope of possible gameplay modifications. For players with existing Creative Mode save files, we will grant a grace period of two weeks within which you're still eligible for achievements, unless you modify any of the creative settings in the pause menu.

*Dark User Interface theme

For all the night owls in our community, don't worry. We got you covered. We're very excited about this feature ourselves, as most of our dev team uses dark mode wherever it's available. So with this update, we're adding a dark theme for the whole user interface (except the main menu), which also opens up a way for potential additional themes for the UI to be added in the future.

*New furniture

What update would it be if we didn't add a plethora of new items for you to spice up your properties with? Apart from the Egg Hunt related decorations, we've added a bunch of general use items (over 120 in total!) that you'll unlock the usual way, through leveling up your landlord.

*Steve's Guidebook

Throughout our Early Access adventure, we've added many new features and mechanics to The Tenants, and there hasn't been an in-game way to catch up with the new additions. On top of that, some players may click through tutorials that pop up when they're engaged with some other type of content, and there was no way to access them later on. Until now, that is. Whenever you feel like it, you can click on the Steve's Guidebook icon in the top right corner of the screen and browse through any of the tutorials that you've previously unlocked.

In a not-so-distant-future update, we also plan to add tenant archetype entries to the Guidebook that will unlock after interacting with a given archetype. If you have any ideas on what more you'd like to see here, please let us know!

Auction tutorial

When we introduced the new system for buying and selling properties, we honestly ran out of time to implement proper tutorials that'd explain the new mechanics. The Spring Update, fortunately, removes this issue, as now you'll be guided by Uncle Steve through your first time selling a property of your own.

We're hoping that this update will make the wait for the Manhattan Update all the more enjoyable. We feel that we've managed to tie some of the crucial loose ends just in time to prepare for the upcoming major release. Feel free to share your thoughts on the Spring Update with us in the comments below or on our official Discord server, which can be found here: link.

Manhattan Update: Eyeing the Big Apple

Hello there, Landlords!

We started working on the Manhattan district itself almost a year ago, and now we're almost ready to finally release it into the wild. At the same time, this will be the last major milestone on our way to the full release, which is scheduled to come out before the end of this year.

Apart from the third district becoming available in-game with the new update, we're also using this opportunity to make some bigger changes to the core gameplay elements before we go ahead with the full release. On top of that, we've also decided to implement a few brand-new mechanics, along with a vast number of QoL tweaks and features. Let's dive into the specifics of what you can expect on July 22nd (yeah, that's the official planned release date)!

Manhattan district
The crown jewel of the update itself, the third district, will finally become available with the Manhattan Update. Available to those that have finished all their main story missions in both the Slums and the Suburbs. Once you buy the property mentioned in the last Suburbs' mission, you'll be prompted by Uncle Steve who'll get the keys to Manhattan for you. Keep in mind though, that you can always use Creative Mode to reach the new district faster!

Apart from the new environment itself, accompanied by new flats to buy and do jobs in, we wanted Manhattan to feel special in comparison to the other two districts. After all, it's the late-game area in which players that "finish" the game (reach the final mission) will spend most of their time.

One of the main features that the last district introduces is the property classification system, which splits apartments into two types: residential and business. The former are your regular apartments that you can rent out to tenants. The latter opens up the possibility to rent your properties to whole companies that will then bring their employees along and start using your apartment as a new office. Business properties will require a different set of items to host an open house, and each company type (there'll be at least a few of those) will require a different set of workstations.

Have you ever dreamed of solving a missing yogurt case ? With office spaces will also come a new set of events, a new tenant archetype (can you guess what it is?), and apartment subscriptions. Ah yes, the subscriptions. More on that later.

Target Cards
In life, not everyone is dealt a good hand of cards, and the same is true for The Tenants. With our last major update, we're adding a new type of progression system, in which you'll receive random Target Cards that you can complete at your own pace. The first set will be fully randomized, but then when you complete a card, you'll be able to choose one of the three random cards for your next target.

These cards will range from signing a particular type of tenant into one of your apartments to performing a given number of sabotages on unsuspecting tenants. On completion, they'll either give you plain cash, Landlord Points, new items, a random gift/service/sabotage, or the brand new Tenant Solver Token, which allows you to solve a chosen apartment event without your intervention.

City Pickups
With the new and beautiful district of Manhattan, we wanted to entice players to explore Wondersville from up close, instead of just jumping from one apartment to the other. With the release of the new update, we advise you to start looking under those bridges and into the chimneys scattered across the city. You might end up finding one of the two kinds of pickups we've implemented in the game:

Respawning pickups - simpler items that can be found in various parts of the town, on pickup will grant either money, Landlord Points, Tenant Hearts, and occasionally a rare epic item.

Collectibles - split into different sets that range from 7 to even 20 pieces. Some can be found only in a single district, while others may be scattered around all three. Each set on completion rewards the player with something different. So, for example, when you collect all Uncle Steve cards, you will receive a permanent move speed buff for Uncle Steve, and picking up all the graffitis will reward you with a set of them to use in your own interiors.

Apartment Upgrades & Subscriptions
And finally, at least when it comes to the biggest of the new features, we have the new apartment Upgrades & Subscriptions systems. We were never quite happy with the old utility system and we've had various ideas on how to rework it. The rework was originally planned for the Renovation Update , but as we sat down to fully design it, it only grew in size and scope with each iteration. Eventually, we had to push it back a little to make sure it was fully ready and compatible with the rest of the game before we release it to the public. Well, it's ready now!

Each apartment will have a plethora of various upgrades that can be installed in them along with a selection of subscriptions that can be turned on and off whenever the player wants to. The three core upgrades that are required to rent a unit out are electricity, heating, and water. Apart from installing them, the player will have to use Uncle Steve to configure each upgrade and place corresponding outlets in the property. Most of the outlets have a limited range in which they work, so it's good to plan ahead where the, let's say fridge, is going to be placed.

On top of that, there'll be a bunch of additional upgrades that may increase the value of the apartment for some tenants and clients, like the automatic cleaning robot (yay!) dispatch stations and such. Meanwhile, subscriptions do not require a permanent installation and they can be switched on and off whenever, although cutting off your tenant's high-speed internet connection will definitely not make them happy.

Whew, we've made it through the most important new additions coming in Manhattan Update. Don't forget to mark July 22nd on your calendars! We can't wait to hear your thoughts on the upcoming update in the comments below or on our official Discord server, which can be found here: link.

Thank you,
